Hey Guys, I am new to this forum and have found a wealth of knowledge just in the last 2 weeks. I am wondering about sandblasting my axle. I recently picked up an 86 Tri Z for $300 from a freind. It is pretty much all there, but has been sitting outside in Nor Cal for last 6 years. Most of the issues are cosmetic, but a lot of rusty parts. My biggest concerns is the axle, it is covered in heavy rust. Is there anyway to clean the axle sucessfully, or is it going to be better to repalce it? What about +2 or +4 axles, anybody know of a good source? Any help would be appreciated.

I think sandblasting maybe to coarse unless you use a real fine sand, maybe try walnut but ive seen some people use a wire wheel and then polish them up and it looks trick.

Thats what I was thinking, figured with splines and threads sandblasting would tear it up. i will try wire wheel, is there a certin polish that works best?

I'm not 100% sure with tri Z's, but as far as i know, all the axles are zinc plated. If you clean it, it will rust even faster. You could always get it powder coated, or re zinc'd. I put mine on my lift, and let it rev up in first gear, and held some fine sandpaper on it, cleaned it up nice, But it rusted after two rides.

if your looking for an aftermarket axle, a banshee axle will fit.

there is also a thread titled "tri z parts interchange" or something like that, you will find a wealth of info there :)

you could pull the wheels off and run it with sandpaper, if you decide to try it, Do it until its polished then wipe it with a oily rag and maintain it, it will rust if you let it go but you'll have to look after it, after it gets wet and muddy. A polished axel will clean up quicker and easier than a rough one will.

Get pvc pipe caps and pipe glue one cap to the end of the bottom of the pipe and put mollases in it then put the axle in the tube close with the other cap and let it sit for a couple weeks the tKe it out and wash it off it takes the rust right off

type "axle refinishing" in the search box. Although that molasses Idea sounds tempting

Thanks man, that is the info I was looking for. I will look into it, but if Banshee axel fits I should have a welath of options to choose from.

2 'foot' wider? Holy crap! : ) I just finished an '82 250R project and the axle was slightly rusted. I used a wire wheel on my drill and sandpaper. It looks decent but not consistent in appearance, like that new one would be. I clear-coated mine to keep it from rusting again.

2 foot..lol no... but crazy70man would say so..... there a plus 2" and yes you can run everything oem or banshee.. and the best locking device i have seen is stock,, Ive tryed every alum one out there and they all get loose .. when that happens it ruins the splines on the sprocket hub and rotor hub.. you will have more in to it shipping and plating it.
unless you can bead blast it and plate it yourself.

oh and I took mine to the dunes and the plateing came off in one ride,,, but im anal and wash my bike after every ride and WD it when its dry. firm believer in preventive maintenance.

Raffa please help. I am wanting to buy one of these +2" banshee axles, but the ad you listed had expired. Any idea where I can find something in the similar price range? Thanks for your help as always.

The link worked for me but it looks like there sold out...might contact seller on Ebay Forwardpowersports. Granted thats a crazy low price and sounds like you get what you pay for if the plating flew off...makes me think the heat treatment could have been rushed as well.

Yes I am a firm believer of you get what you pay for. I did contact the seller, he said they were out of stock and no idea of a timetable for next batch. I assumed Raffa meant he re-plated the old axel and that is when it came off. Is is true that the plating came off after just one ride with these cheap aftermarket axles? Not worth the time if that is the case.

Thanks for the info. I have a link to the parts interchange saved, it is a lifesaver. Are you sure about the length on this axle? I seen it on ebay yesterday, but wasnt sure if it ended up +2". Did not have a chance to measure my stock Z axle last night.

Wider is better IMO so anything over stock is an improvement in stablity.
