I run bel ray 15wt. Little more dampning than stock.

I use 10wt belray and have used 10wt amsoil in both of my ATC's. both worked the same. Upgraded to progressive suspension springs in the forks in my 86 then put the 86 used spring in my 85. Worth the $100 investment and the used 86 springs were a good upgrade over the 85 ones.

Do you know the quantities in each leg as we don't have a manual yet- one ordered! Tried downloading but it wouldn't work with my I pad . I do the work on flying fleas bike for my sins lol!

Don't have experience with the 85 R, which has 38 mm forks. My 85 Z has 35 mm forks and they bottomed out way too easily with the factory recommended 10w. I run 20w now and the forks work great. I use the same amount recommended in the service manual. Also learned not to put any air pressure in my forks. Doesn't make any sense but running air pressure makes them bottom out easier. Now I lift the front tire off ground when I fill the forks with oil, then put the caps on and leave air pressure alone. My forks work better with this configuration than they have in all the years I have had my Tri-Z.

I'm pretty sure valves on the top are to release air not to put air in. Your suppose to take front tire off ground and release buildup air from riding. Adding air can blow seals

I choose oil weight to complement the speed of max flow through the valve body.

1986 465cc/15.5 oz in the forks
1985 400cc/13.56

If your seals are all good I dont even take my forks off when I change the oil. I take the drain bolt out on one side at a time hold the front brake and squirt the oil in a cup. Now my question on this is..... Are the 85-86 forks all the same besides the spring set up? I use my 86 springs in the 85 forks with 15.5 oz oil and 15.5 oz oil with the progressive springs in my 86 forks. At first I just replaced the seals with leak proof ones then put in Honda ones with new bronze sliders which seemed to really help the ride.

might be a stupid question, but how do you get the oil back in if you only remove the drain bolt?

harley daverson heavy works great for fast rocky desert like riding will not bottom out,do not put air in schrader valves these are there to let pressure out after a ride.this works well for me but we all have our own thoughts.

you fill from the top.

you fill from the top.

So something i have put off or paid someone to do is as simple as drain from bottom, refill from top? So just unscrew fork caps and pour the oil back in? It simply can't be that simple?

Its that simple. Make sure the front is elevated enough that that forks remain fully extended or you'll be hunting those fork caps in the neighbor's lawn.

Manual says 0-1.0 psi can be put in the front forks.

Is there a way to pull off spring change without removing/disassembly? Wanting to put progressive springs in while I'm at it.

ya. the springs pull right out from the top once you have the caps off
