Get those machines lowered and put on those tiny tires. The 5th annual Battle at the Barn races are coming up January 25th and 26th in Des Moines Iowa. This is Coke Syrup sprayed on Concrete small Oval Racing and not for the timid. Pays $300 to win and there is only 6 to 10 Outlaw 3 Wheelers that show up for this event each year so the odds are pretty good that you will make some money. Friday is practice and Saturday is the races. Its a lot of fun. They race quads, cycles, go carts and about anything else you can think of including riding Lawn Mowers and Golf Carts. Watch this site for more info.

Do you know if I would be allowed to run Trish, my Banshee conversion, in the outlaw class? I REALY want to do this...just might have to come up with my owne "missile kit"...or would some 16in tires on 8in wheels work? offset rear end and stagger the tires? Basically, I don't have any more money to invest into racing this year...but if it can be done on the cheap, i might be there!

Its a Outlaw Class so any 3 Wheeler is allowed home built or not. No engine limits, all one class. 16" tires with Banshee power should work as long as you air them up nice and hard. Its all left turns so kick the right rear out as far as you can and bring the left rear in as close as you can. Lower the whole machine. Most remove the rear shock completely. No suspension works on concrete. Do it!

The winning Tri Z #7 of Fast Eddie Bergman runs Hoosier's all the way around. Here is what the front one looks like.

And lots of stagger on the rear

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj130/radrandy2001/EddiesRearSetupjpg.jpg

And this is what it looked like 3 years ago before we built the better nerf bars

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj130/radrandy2001/EddiesslamedTriZbasementview.jpg

Here is a picture taken this past weekend that shows the nerfs now. Mike Cook is on the left with his Honda and Eddie on the right with the winning machine. They pretty much spend the whole day cleaning and prepping tires and messing with width and stagger as the track changes over the two day, 4 practice sessions, 2 heats races and the Main Event race weekend.

I am trying to get some pics loaded up and some vids edited so hang in there but for now I have the link to the Pro Photo Guys site and how to find some pics. Super high quailty too. Follow these instructions

Go here http://www.photoreflect.com/store/store.aspx?p=25540

Then click on the link for Battle at the Barn on the right

On the next screen click on “continue’

Look for the thumbnail that ends in #21

Once that opens, look at the bottom for page #3 and you will see some 3W pics toward the bottom.

If you click on one it will enlarge and you can use an arrow or “next” to advance.

Once you are done with that page click on “back to thumbs” in the upper right.

Now look to the right side for a skinny white box with some numbers in it. Click on the little arrow and a drop down box will let you pick more albums. The pics are scattered throughout these albums but here are the ones you want to look at as they appear in that white box. Look for the last 2 numbers.

#21 page 3 pics at bottom
#23 page 5 pics at bottom
#24 page 2 pics in middle
#28 page 2 pics at top
#29 page 2 pics in middle
#29 page 5 pics at top
#12 page 5 pics in middle
#13 page 3 pics at top
#14 page 9 pics in middle
#15 page 2 pics at bottom
#17 page 3 pics at bottom
#18 page 2 pics at bottom

Thank you for posting the pic. I'm gathering parts for a first gen Tecate flat tracker and have seen a few pics from a distance of a couple that had raced up there. Do you happen to have any close up pics or details on their setups? Thanks again Randy, I can't get enough of these bikes.

Thanks, the ages of the front row of the main event was Eddie Bergman 54, Eric Moore 55 and Mike Cook 54. The field vids are at my house and taken from the top of my head and like Eddie & Mike, we all turn 55 this year. In the first two practice sessions this past weekend we had 69 1/2 year old Jerry Crabb out there too on his wild XR600 home built machine.

Just a heads up, If you actually plan on running your 200x in flat track. You really need nerfbars on both sides for protection. I chipped the left side of my SRP fenders the last weekend from a very minor collison. Not too mention the nerfbars prevent a wheel rollover.

yaegerb
01-30-2013, 11:46 AM
good advice. Are you speaking of the full nerf's, like your missile set? I already have the dg nerfs with the custom mounts.

xrider
01-30-2013, 11:48 AM
The DGs should work, but you might consider an angular bar on each side similar to our missle nerfs that will protect up the side and rear of the fenders.

Yes, you sill see several sparks in the videos. Some is from Matt's frame under the engine dragging (too soft of forks when lowered) and others from the riders metal toe plates on their boots hitting the ground when leaning that far.

Are the inside markers only a suggestion? Looks like the 69 ran all over the tecate and then matt.

Well, there are two sides to every story. The first year we went to these Iowa races we, the Kansas guys, were shocked to see racers in several classes, not just 3 Wheelers, make passes by going totally inside the corner marker disc. We never raced like that ourselves and it sure looked like cheating to us. The next year in the riders meeting everyone was told that if you had one tire on the wrong side of the corner marker “and gained a position, you would be docked one position”. What that did was basically make the corner disc part of the racing surface much like you see in Road Racing when cars go up on those white and red striped aprons. The result of course is getting some air under your tires and making you all herky jerky.
All the racers, at least once or twice hit these corner disc when practicing and racing. Typically on the start when the 4 inch taller right rear overrides the shorter inside tire it yanks you over there and we all know how critical tire pressure affects the steering on a 3 Wheeler. Imagine a super sticky no spin launch with such a height difference in the two rear tires. Also this same situation can and does happen when you attempt to pitch and turn the 3 Wheeler. It will grab and jerk you, sometime violently, to the inside.
Unfortunately having nerf bars has made racers a little too gutsy. History will show that all of us old timers started racing without nerf bars and if you made a contact pass like seen in the video’s you ended up on your head. In fact, when the quads came out they were allowed nerf bars yet 3 Wheelers were not. By the mid 1980’s the Missile Kits came out and to my knowledge, here in the Midwest, it was the first that we saw of their use on 3 Wheelers. It was only a matter of time of racers getting bump passed that most riders began adding them and using them as a passing tool. I personally did not have nerf bars until the early 1990’s and I think those of us that raced without them are cleaner racers for that reason because we had to give a little more room or get hurt.
The real issue is when riders constantly try to put a 4 foot wide machine into a 2 foot wide hole and smash pass because they have the nerfs protecting them. Certainly this can be dangerous to all involved and it’s also hard on the machines and equipment. You can watch the videos and see who does this and who doesn’t lap after lap. We would prefer that all riders make clean and safe passes and stay off the corner disc completely but if the rules allow the disc to be used for gaining track width and the nerf bars take away some of the danger, then it really falls upon the racer themselves to decide just how bad they want to make that pass and how others might look at them as being a clean or dirty racer.

This one is from the winner #7 Eddie Bergman on his 86 Tri Z. If you listen to his engine he has it all revved up and ready to go and watching the flagman to his right. The flagman is making moves like he might let them go and Eddie's clutch gets so hot it kills the engine. He has to throw his arms up to get attention and to get restarted then grab the holeshot. Stress sometimes helps :)

Great job with this event Randy! I always enjoy watching you guys have a blast. While I never was an incredible fan of flat track racing, I gotta admit its getting more and more appealing with age.

You might want to consider forging a gentlemen's agreement within your race glass in regards to the marker, even if the track has other rules. For example, we all agree that there will be no deliberate contact on the track within our group, and we always inform new racers of it, and its works out pretty well as most have been willing to honor that with enthusiasm.

For many years we have used the Missile Go Kart adapter hubs for running kart tires and wheels but the old Trophy brand 2 piece wheel 1/2s are really hard to find anymore. All the new kart wheels have a tiny bolt pattern and use 1 piece wheels made by Douglas just like ourATV's use only in a 6" diameter. A few years ago I bought a newer kart wheel hub and Eddie Bergman and I talked about using a kart axle on a 3 Wheeler and making a different swing arm and all kinds of idea's. Well Eddie got to looking around and did some measuring and the little stinker found a hollow kart axle that has a 1 1/4" OD. It cost less than $50 and he took his stock Tri Z axle and has the OD of it machined down to fit the ID of the kart axle. They left a squared off edge so the two axles would butt up against each other and then plug welded the kart axle to the Tri Z axle in a few spots to prevent rotation. He cut the kart axle making the right side wider than the left since width to the right is needed in these sticky ovals. Next he found some wider hubs that used a long keyway and a pair only cost about $50. Since a clutch is involved he didn't want to sheer off the hub and key on a standard kart hub. Now he can use all the new modern wheels and can slide his width all over the place to dial the machine in. The machine work cost $140 and the axle and hubs less than another $100 so for under $250 he has a super trick axle for this kind of racing. Too bad we didn't have those kind of kart parts available 20+ years ago :) Check it out. Looks really nice. Eddie's been a dealer mechanic for 30+ years so he's no dummy.

I had this one last video of a crash in the main event that involved #69 Mike Moore coming from the back row and climbing his Dad (outlaw24) rear tire and flipping over. This was one of the three restarts for that main event.

Here is a pic of that 69 1/2 year old racer Jerry Crabb

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj130/radrandy2001/Battle%20at%20the%20Barn%202013/JerryCrabb_zps819ad1a4.jpg

Jerry Crabb is quite the racer. He has raced Cycles, 3 Wheelers, 4 Wheelers and even Sprint Cars. At this years event he pulled out this old mean machine and he told me it was a handful. The heavy XR600 engine was too powerful for the crazy traction the track had and that it would have worked better on dirt where it would have broke loose a little instead of trying to yank his arms off. In practice he got tangled up with #69 Mike Moore and after one more practice session he decided at age 69 1/2 that he couldn't take the chance of getting hurt again so pulled out of the race. He offered the machine for a others to race but there were no takers. Eric Moore's wife Connie told me Jerry's machine was Evil :)

Check this out. Both machines tipping and both riders bodies touching. Luckily they both came back down and no one was hurt. That concrete floor is not forgiving and could really bust you up if you landed wrong. Just how many of you would be doing something like this at all let alone at almost 70 years of age. My hats off to Jerry Crabb !!!

Randy, this is one of the coolest things I have seen in a while. Do you happen to know the id" of the axle? The reason I ask is I would love to try this on a Tecate Axle, with Eddies blessings of course, but It has a pretty large taper to it. I found an axle the same 1 1/4" as this for $34. http://www.bmikarts.com/1-14-Tubular-Steel-Axle_p_515.html

The use of the modern wheels with the ability to adjust width is a pretty sweet option. Hell you could do a couple stock axles with varying widths for several applications. Please pass my kudos along to Eddie for the nice work.

Eddie got the axle here http://www.out2win.com/catalog/axleus.html#125 and its the cheapest hollow one on the page $44.

The Hubs were from the same place, The Buller Rear Hub Long for 1 1/4" and American Boly Pattern $28 each.

I'll tell Eddie you liked it.
