Hi guys. I just wanted to ask if any one has any good tips about the older toyota pickup trucks. I am in need of a truck for my business and want something that will work day in day out and that won't cost an arm and a leg at the pump. I found a 1987 reg cab short box 4x4 the guy is asking $1000 but it needs a clutch and its been parked in his lawn for the last two years. I called him and he already dropped his price from $1000 to $800

Thanks Aaron

I am by no means an expert in these trucks, but I know they're pretty good. Dirtcrasher knows these trucks inside and out so hopefully he'll have something to say.

First thing is, he doesn't specify if it's a 4 cylinder or a 6. In your situation, I would go with a 4 banger for certain.

Secondly, rot is the first thing you need to look at when buying a vehicle. The clutch could be shot, the engine bad, broken springs, etc, but those are all parts you can replace. If you end up buying a rot-box, it will always be a rot-box. You will have issue after issue until you get sick of it and end up scrapping it. Start with a solid foundation and do not buy anything that's rotted to holy hell. If you go to look at it, bring a ball-peen hammer and give the frame and spring hangers and shackles some good whacks. Obviously you want all solid metal. Some rust is to expected with a truck that age, but if you buy something rotted, you're just buying someone else's junk.

If it does turn out to be a 6 banger, I don't really know for sure how good or bad they are on gas. All I know is if I were in your shoes, I'd get a 4 banger for sure. Otherwise you're just throwing money out the window.

Good luck.

I had an '87 regular cab years ago. My clutch went bad at 90k miles. The 22R motor is one of the greatest motors of all time IMO (right up there with the Big Red 250). The 22R is a 2.4 litre 4 cylinder. I have to think the bed would be rusted off that truck by now. If the body and frame are still intact, you shouldn't need to worry about the engine or tranny. There are quite a few Toyota truck guys on this board that will likely chime in with more insight.

I would just say, pay special attention to the frame, in fact the whole UC

I had an 86 reg cab 4x4. I replaced clutch and trans bearings at about 140k. It was at 200k when I sold it in the late 90's to a friend and he is still driving it today. That little 22r is still purring, they are great engines.

Fabio and Keister are right about the rust, seems older Toyotas that spent any time up north rotted away. I've seen bed sides that rusted completely off. If it's solid, you can't go wrong for $800.

Worse than the bed, is when every damn fuel line snaps, the fuel pump dies and half the bolts snap on anything you touch.

Sometimes you cannot use heat or the part is very difficult to get to.

They're a good truck to keep for about 10-12 years and then EVERY bolt snaps.

The 1st or 2nd gen Tacomas are very nice!!

Spend more money and get more out of it, just like a trike :D

Well it wasn't as bad a i thought it would be but its the guy used tip ties and fence wire to hold it all together so I am going to pass on it. I did find an older pick up. This guy is more my style to http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAd?AdId=427994742&MessageId=MSG.VIEW_AD.REPLY_TO_AD_SENT&mpname=R2S&mpname=Activity-R2S&mpuid=1700214%3B174%3B427994742%3B43686774%3B%3B&secev=AQAAATrLSq4AAM0AAAACACIxM2FkOTNjZWYzMi5hMjBi MjczLjYxNmM1LmZmZmQwNjQ1AAAAABmCrnYBAAAAAgAAAACDIV YAmeFHniDlCXyXQ261kxJzJZSSf%2BA*

All I know is that a few years back, the Brits over at "Top Gear" had a mission to to destroy the very truck you're talking about...even had it on top of a building that was imploded...they were still able to turn the key and drive it off....22R motor as well.

Motors are good and will outlast the truck around it. I had an 88 with the 22RE a few years back

Why is it that you have to constantly d!ct with american made cars & trucks ? The last line in your sig. says it all P. O. S. !!!
The last line in my sig say that a POLARIS is a pos doesn't say that about anything else.
