1983 yamaha ytm 200k yellow, my dad is the original owner and just gave it to me because he got a new john deere gator thing. Anyway its in great shape and all original except for the race cam and cobra exhaust which he had put on the day he bought it at the dealership.
I was driving it 6 years ago and the shifter flopped straight down after a downshift. We found the end of the shifter shaft broke which i hear on this site may be pretty common. Anyway dad fixed it somhow with a bolt through the shifter linkage into the end of the shift shaft. The only problem this gives us is that we have to keep tightening the bolt as it loosens from shifting.
Any ideas for a more secure fix so i dont have to keep carrying this wrench with me? I cant find a new shift shaft anywhere and im not sure if its hard to change etc. thanks!

edit: also looking for the rubber boot that goes on the front side of the carbuerater. mine has a bunch of cracks.

There has to be a way to keep it tight..Use some loctite and a lock nut...

That has a Centrifugal clutch Right? And a reg clutch, If so, What does your Centrifugal clutch look like, mines acting werid, and i Havn't tor it apart, since you have yours apart, i thought maybe you would know, Mine stick sometimes, like if im at idle, it tries to move, i donno if there is springs or what not, I'm scared to take mine apart, lol.

sounds like you need to adjust yours. there is an adjuster on the right side on the clutch case on the outside. tells you how to do it in the manuals. try that.

HELP!!!!!!!! im really mad now! i just got the new shift shaft put in from a 1985 Yamaha DX225 / YTM225 Tri Moto off ebay and the shaft is an inch and a half to two inches longer!!!!!!:mad::mad: what to do now guys???? looks like the difference is that this shaft went to the 1985 dx/ytm and had a different foot shifter lever setup.
heres the differences on the shift lever itself:
http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1983-yamaha-tri-moto-200-ytm200k/o/m147059#sch233397
and:
http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1985-yamaha-tri-moto-225dx-ytm225dxn/o/m146955#sch230615
my question now is can i just get the shifter lever for the dx and use it now?

well.... turns out that my 83 200k shifter has so many pivot points that it will work just fine now that i made a very small tweak to the brush guard. this makes me happy. now just waiting on a seal and two gaskets. should have them by mid next week!

aaronmach1

I have already done this to a ytm 200k motor, and your best option to stabilize the shaft is to get a 225dx stator cover, it will bolt right on but has a stabilizing brace for the extended shift shaft.

well got it out and running yesterday! awesome! seems a little stiffer to shift im not sure why but works great!
thanks muthey. i will be looking into that. because right now i have no idea what you mean.

MY chain flew off and broke my case on my 200k stator case cover, and i had bout a 225 one and it bolted up, but didnt cover the bottom part of the motor...

I would like to see pics of where it doesn't cover the motor chunckers, not that I don't believe you I am just curious, as they look almost identicle to me, I have a ytm 200k, and a ytm 225, and I can't see a difference in coverage.

i returned the cover or i'd take pic's, It wasn't much that was covered, but enough to leak oil all over. the one i got from ebay might have been labeled wrong for all i know. i just no it wouldn't work, and i was told it was from a 225.
