Anyone know about old scorpion snowmobiles? I have a 71 stinger III and need to know carb adjustments. At least what would be the ideal settings to start with?

also forgot to mention, its the CCW 400cc engine. and this carb is weird, it doesnt have a float, bowl, or anything like that. all i see is little reeds and ports.

im pretty sure the carb you are working on is a diaphram carb, these were very popular for the old sleds.....i have worked on a few...there should be a couple screws on the side right next to each other, one is a high speed needle, and one is a low speed needle, they should be marked somehow

Scorpion sleds are sweet. I think 84ATC250R is right with it being a diaphram carb. I almost picked up a "Super Sting" myself last year. They were made in northern Minnesota up until 84 i think. Sorry I can't help out on the carb much though.

yes, this sled is nice, first pull almost all the time! as far as the carb, theres a screw on the right side and a screw on the left side. the one on the left has two little "handles" on it. i will get some pics up if that would help. Thanks

Hrm I really wish I could help you out. You might want to try finding a snowmobile forum with a vintage sleds section. Otherwise just play with different adjustments until if feels right i guess? Is it running rich/lean or not idiling? I love you exhaust though! Is it supposed to serve as a personal heater too? :D

well first i need to change the plugs, but right now its not idleing nor does it have any power. it was straight pipe so i found some old pipe from my old car exhaust and a muffler from a briggs motor and welded it up, sounds like a big weedwacker! does keep you warm though... :D

I've worked on alot of old sleds so heres my 2 cents, looks like a Walbro carb(I could be wrong thogh) first thing is buy a diaphram kit, theres like 6 gaskets/diapharm's in there, be carefull taking it apart cause it's like a jigsaw puzzle puting back toghther, what happens is if it sits with gas in the carb it dries out the diapharms and makes em stiff and dry, replace the needle and seat also(yes there is one despite the lack of float). If where you I'd find a real exhaust for it, if it doesnt get enough back pressure it'l burn the rings/piston, your plugs wil look ash white also. also if it's been siting for a long time I'd re-seal(not expensive, like 25$ for a complete gasket/seal kit) cause other wise it's a matter of time before the seal's give out, gasoline eats seals on 2 strokes, not being stored properly over a munber of summers doesnt help(thats the most commen cause)anyway good luck with it.

well, i put some new plugs in it today and it ran fine but it didnt idle for a very long time. i know about the backpressure and all that but i had this for a number of years now and this is going to be the last winter of driving it before it goes to the junkyard. right now it has awesome compression and always starts on the first pull so i dont care what happens to it anymore. next summer it will be ridden also just to beat on it for a last time! dont get me wrong i dont beat on my stuff but this i dont care anymore. even though it has never given me any problems yet. also i had the carb apart the other night and all the reeds or whatever you call them are in good condition.
