83 yamaha ytm 200k. Why is my headlight really really dim at idle? as soon as i rev it up or im driving it gets bright and works perfect. Do i need to fix somthing or is that how these are normally?

I've never had a yamaha.....But the old hondas did that to. Alot of times I saw folks with the idle turned down so far it would barely light........I like my idle just a bit high....I like knowing its getting the oil it needs....And the headlight stayed brighter.

Its normal, with no battery your totally dependent on the alternator/stator output. The slower the engine speed the lower the voltage output. So when you rev it up the voltage comes up.

You can try a slightly smaller wattage bulb. On the '82 250R, the stock bulb was a 55/60W, and it dimmed at idle, because the stator wasn't really strong enough for that size bulb. We replaced it with a 45/45W (stock size for the '85 250R), and it solved the problem; bright at idle, and even brighter at higher RPM.
