I recently picked up an old big red from a guy I think it was sitting for a a while I changed all the fluids adjusted the valves and have been clearing it out for the last day seems to start to be running better After whilei shift down if I wasn't fifth-year and I slowed all the way down to a complete stop and went to go push down all the gears at once the gear shifter will stick down but if I'm driving and I go from fifth to fourth Or from fourth to third it doesn't stick I just tap it down and it comes back up anyone know what could be causing this?

First.....Punctuation makes fer alot easier read!!!

Unsure bout yer problem.....I'd be checking and changing and rechecking fluids to be sure of no sludge. And for me anyway, its a very rare time that I dont downshift through every gear.....Much easier on the brakes.....Lol....and I love shifting. Haha! I'd suspect that as you run it back in more that issue may take care of itself.

Being the estute rocket scientist I am,
I missed the fact that the shifter was dragging on the case.

MAJOR pain to rebend. 2 huge pipe wrenches AFTER taking it off.

Inside the side cover?
Try the search key.
Lots of good posts on 'shift'
or
'shift linkage'

There's a bracket that straddles the coiled spring and that bracket can crack.
Parts numbers should be in the posts that are already on file.
If not,
I'll repost for you.

Yeah, if it's not a bent shifter hanging up on the case,
get a side cover gasket, the 2 threaded pins and that shift shaft bracket.

or take it apart and just buy what you need.

I have enough 250's to warrant having those parts around,

good luck and please keep us posted.

ps - if you're ttrying to shift from 5 all the way to neutral while stopped, you really have to rock the machine back and forth to get them to click into the shift muffs.
Not sure any of them will pop 5 gears down while not moving.

Thanks.

You sure I didn't miss anything except for part numbers?

Hey, didn't we both go through this last summer at the same time?

I went through one that needed this repair also... Its as common as the shift drum stopper on a 110/125.
