They saw a schoolbus sized asteroid on Sunday which came by on tuesday at 140,000 miles.
Closer than the moon.

It's the same size as the one that flattened 800 sq miles in Tunguska Russia in the early 1900's.

Maybe that's what the ancients saw and it missed us.
