I am trying to get my head lights to work.....I am using a 350x headlight on a 85 250r, and as soon as I turn on the lights the bulbs burn out.....I am getting 26.4 vac to both the high and low hot leads at idle, there is no direct short to either lead untill I turn on the switch...each lead shows a short to ground when the switch is on and switched to its perspective high/low position....is this a regulator problem or a switch issue or both....any help would be great.

Thanks,

Jeff

your regulator is bad. The regulator is actually a shunt meaning any voltage over 13.6vac is shunted overboard for lack of a better word The lighting coil will generate voltages from about 11vac to well over 50vac uncapped depending on RPMS. This is where the regulator takes the voltage generated and caps it at 13.6vac. If you're reading 26.4vac, your regulator is bad.

Another question....does the regulator bolt to the frame, or just hang in the rubber mount?.....mine is ziptied up (for now) but there is a bolt with a ground wire that looks like it could bolt through the rear hole in the reg...

If i recall correctly the regulator sits in a rubber mount on a metal tang and there is the ground wires on a bolt to the right of it.

Edit... Just checked the service manual and thats correct, the regulator is not bolted on. If you need the manual click my link below and get it, should help you check and troubleshoot the problem, but it sounds to me like you just have a bad regulator.
