85 200x timing adjustment

Hello, I have a question on the timing adjustment nuts. I recently adjusted my valves and was not exactly sure what nut to loosen for the timing adjustment. I loosened just the top nut about half turn. I now have been reading to only adjust the bottom nut. Could I have caused damage by only loosening the top nut.? obviously just adjusting the top nut did not do anything. Thanks.
