Now before anyone gets to flaming me (already have been through that gauntlet on Thumper Talk) with the new technology in diesels, why wouldn't it be possible? No, weight would not be a problem, I've had to say that over and over on TT, the engines already weigh darn near the same with our new alloys. Diesels aren't all cast iron like the old detroits were. Mazda has come out with their new diesel, a 2.2L 4cyl that has a compression ratio of 14:1, yes you read that right, 14:1. They get the charge to fire with some pretty neat injectors, and variable exhaust timing. What do you think? Is it the wave of the future? Or a diesel 2 stroker maybe?

Please don't go flaming me again

Detroit's were 2 cycle. Thats why they were so loud. Timberjack used them in log skidders. You can hear a Timberjack with a detroit from about 3 miles away.

There was a company in the late 60's or 70's that made a diesel powered chainsaw. The handle was filled with propane to light a burner that warmed a glow plug type device in the side of the cylinder. They worked good, but they were said to be severely under powered.

I love the diesel 3 wheeler! I'm just waiting for the diesels to become smaller, and lighter (tech to trickle down) and ones going to get stuffing into a motorcycle!

Kawasaki makes a diesel mule. Diesels will probably only be used in utility atvs and stuff, but not sport models for a while. I saw this pretty cool Fat Cat type of a bike that is being made in germany, it was a diesel, had reverse, could tow, was well built, reminded me of a Rokon, but modernized.

Diesel would be neat, typically they don't R up like a gasser though. Not sure why they are not made bigger, but the Nitro RC cars have an engine that power to weight ratio is compairable to the top fuel drag racers. a 3.3CC engine puts out something like 2hp. They are more or less a 2 stroke diesel and R like hell, something like 20-40k rpm. The small crappy one I have is 1 gear and goes upto 45mph.

BTW.... could always do something like this... I don't think anyone complanes about a lack of power :)

I can see why the big companies never did it. That thing is slower than a lathartgic sloth, not to mention all that smoke isn't going to make anyone happy. the torque has to be most at like reeeeealy low RPM, so utility is the best use (not what I would want :naughty:)

i'd posted about this a couple years ago during my deployment, they've got a diesel dirtbike thats pretty much exclusively special forces and it has a pretty decent power/weight ratio. i wouldn't have had an issue sticking it in a trike since they were about a 650cc(it went fast enough for me) engine so some cutting and mods are about all it'd need. i know they made a smaller 400-450cc version but i've never ridden that one. nowadays im sure you can find a smaller one that wouldn't be much of a struggle to fit. but keep in mind a diesel bike would be more for work than fun because i doubt you'd need that much power doing anything other than hauling and drags

A few years back I saw an article in one of the mags about the diesel dual sport bike that was built for the military. It was based in a Kawasaki dual sport bike,I think is was their 650. It was being built right here in the high desert area of California. If I remember right it got about 120 MPG and top speed was about 60 MPH. It was built because the military wants all their vehicles, generators and other stuff to all run on the same fuel. It was not available to the public.

Kasey built a Cat Trike sometime back, pretty swee too. I think it runs off biofuel:

eh, this thread interests me. I thought Kaseys CAT trike would be cool with a diesel in it.
