View Full Version : Having a lot of fun with winter riding (lots of pics)

There's a nice valley I ride through with my trike (3 blocks and I'm on gravel - 1.5 miles down to valley); just thought I'd share some pics I took the other day.

My neighbor owns the land down there (farmer) and rents permanent lots to many campers. There's even a few log cabins down there. It winds back in there another mile or so, and then there's a logging trail that goes up the bluff. We used to ride down in this valley from about 1981-1988 (then I joined the Navy); I had a dirt bike and a couple of my friends had 3 wheelers. Well of course I never did much winter riding on my dirt bike , so...I've been discovering how much fun it is on my 185s and Big Red.

We've had several periods of snow, meltdown, refreeze here, but lately it has snowed just enough along with a slight warm up to make the snow nice and sticky and the snowmobile trails easy to follow. The logging road is always open to ATVs, etc. but it's more of a challenge in the winter as it gets pretty steep in spots. Once you're at the top of the bluff, it goes on and on through the woods on a pretty nice trail all the way to another farmer's field. Well normally his gate is closed and locked but it too is open for the snowmobiles once there is enough snow.

So I've been following that trail through the field, which leads to another skinny trail down a steep bluff, then across a creek (nice wooden bridge), then UP the next bluff to ultimately a dirt road (which I ride from there instead of following the snowmobile trail again thru another field). Man, what fun. I took my 185 out tonite and the whole ride lasted 2.5 hours. Never saw one snowmobile. Just one racoon:D

Here's some pics from the other day. Couldn't get myself in the picture since I was the only one out there...oh well.

Even more pics; hearing the creek running and a few crows cawing was just awesome. Nobody around...

If you look closely at the pic of the pines, you can see the bald eagle I caught just as he took off from a tree branch. That was awesome to see.

Yep, I always have my phone (gets reception in a lot of those areas), a flashlight, and my tool kit. I am SO appreciative for the areas I'm able to ride, that I have a nice running trike, and that I'm in good health so I can enjoy it all. I ride almost every day.

And I have a provincial park that's closed for the winter around here and tons of trails in there.
Just have to watch out for the cross country skiers on some trails they don't like when I'm on there lol.

Great pics Worden...can't remember if I mentioned before, but that's a nice 185 (I see it's almost time to do the front fork boots though eh - I'm just in the process on doing mine on my 200). I like snow riding at night when the moon is out - everything is lit up you almost don't need a light!

Yeah, I've been lazy and putting off the boots :D Hell I haven't even washed the machine since I bought it last November - I feel terrible about that. I'll scrub it top to bottom when it gets to be about 45 or 50 degrees. I need to do the boots on my Big Red as well.

I plan on buying the rear fender decals for it (ebay) as well. Not sure if I mentioned it before but I am the third owner. The guy I bought it from had it for about 5 years and didn't use it much, and he kept it inside. The original owner was a farmer whom I'm sure kept it garaged and just putzed around the farm with it. It's pretty tight and is in great shape overall for being 30 years old.
