so, i picked up a very cheap rolling chassis today on CL. the guy said it was a 2nd gen frame and my 1st gen motor should bolt right up.

i kinda looked it over today in the driveway comparing it to my 84, and, aside from the front suspension and the 350x headlight, i can't tell an obvious difference in the frame.

i was able to drop my spare '84 200x motor in the frame and it did appear as it would bolt right in

how can i tell if the frame is a 1st or 2nd gen? im pretty new to this game.

thanks

The most simple difference in the frame itself is that the 2nd gen's have square tubing instead of round.

Well I believe a 84 motor shouldn't just "bolt right up" to a 2nd gen. There's hardly anything interchangeable between 1st and 2nd gen. Also ebaccm is correct on that tubing being square on the 2nd gens. I'm going to guess the one on the left is an 84 and the one on the right is definitely not a 2nd gen, round tubing.

Edit: After looking at that swingarm it's gotta be an 84 or 85 frame. The 83 had a rounded swingarm I believe. My 84 has square tubing like the picture.

You have some 86/7 Tecate rear rims and tires on the spare frame...

That frame in your picture is a first gen.

sweet, thanks guys, i figured it was a 1st gen.. that makes my life a whole lot easier.

the guy i bought it from swore it was a 2nd gen and that my 1st gen motor would bolt right up.. for what i paid for it, it was worth the risk.. i could easily part it out for triple what i paid for it.. lol.

So is that a 350x front end? The brake stuff is swapped on the left side instead of the right.

Thats what i thought too. I actually took the fork tubes off yesterday, but when i tried to switch the caliper to the right side, it was forward of the fork tube (as opposed to behind it)... so i ended up switching it back to how it is now in the pics. otherwise, the caliper would be very exposed to hitting trees/rocks/whatever

i looked at my 200x forks and the axle bolt and the calipers are both on one side of the fork

on these forks on that chassis i bought yesterday, the axle bolt is on one side, and the fork caliper bolts are on the other side

it's weird.. i need to look at it again and figure it out, maybe compare it with my buddy's 350x

Yes, look at the headlight. Its a 350x front end.

Well I know the headlight is a 350x but he could of put 250r forks on with a 350x headlight. You never know.
