20 miles an hour, flat terrain, full tank. I need a best guesstimate as I am planning my first long ride. Thanks. 1986 250es. I'm 235lbs, mudlite tires......

Depends a lot on riding style, steady speed, fairly high gear (needs to be full clutch engage) should be the best "MPG" for it. I would think 50+ shouldn't be a problem if the engine is tuned well, no leaks etc.

Thanks guys, that gets me a good idea of the size of gas cans I will need. There will be little chance to hit a pump so I just wanted to be safe. It should be really steady mid speed type of riding....a bit of a pleasure cruise I guess. An old set of train tracks were removed for 80miles or more one direction. They have yet to name it any sort of "walking" path, so the time is right to see part of the county from a different view, before they ban motorized vehicles. Should be a blast, hell I may pack a tent and stay a night at the end of the trail. My brother is going too, so we should be good to go. (cell phones will be charged!)

Sounds like a blast for sure! How many machines will be there? A 5 gal gas can and topped up gas tanks should be more than enough to be safe for 1-2 machines I would suspect. I know my big reds last quite a long time on gas in sand really running them. Something like 20+ miles of riding for half of a tank (around 5 hours of riding, more playing than distance riding).

Just the two of us, so a 5 gal it is. Possibly this weekend, maybe the next pending work. I'll take some pics along the way!

I know my big red will run all day and burn 1/2 to 3/4 a tank

We have a trail that was an old Railway bed years ago (Iron Horse Trail). I also wanted to find my range so I packed gas and ran until on reserve. Made an honest 200 km's packing no gear except 2 1/2 gallon gas can, backpack and my 160lb arse. We run through a couple of towns so lots of gas wasn't required. I put a thread up here somewhere. I'll have to find it and add it later.

Doing the math.... 200km = 124.274 miles

2.5 gal @ 124.274 miles = 49.71MPG..... Not bad!
For the other standard... 21.13 KPL if I did the math right.

Just wanted to point out and note, that was done with a 200, a 250 will generally eat a bit more gas due to the basic fact it is a larger engine, unless the 250es is quite a bit higher geared in 5th vs the 200es.... I kind of think it is (I have both machines lol). The best MPG is generally the slowest speed in highest gear with any clutches fully engaged, works for cars and atvs :).
