Found a 81 250r for sale for 250. It's on ok shape needs headlight and plastics were painted badly but not cracked. I just know nothing about the 81 model. What kind of speed can I get out of it and is it worth buying it is supposed to run perfect

For that price you should not have to ask what we think. You should be posting pics of the 250R that you just picked up. There are lots of ways to get paint off, just do a search on it on here. I love the look of the first gen foolers.

An 81 will have a rear drum brake, 3 bolt hubs, non drilled front brake disc. Most other stuff is the same as the 82 besides air box. I have 3 fist gen R's myself. I had one that I had a 200x front on it but sold that trike, I have come to love the wide front tire. They do slide some but the look makes up for it. there are some after market parts out there but are pricey. Pipes, grab bars, rebuild kits and lots of the wear items can be bought new yet.

I dunno if they're good in mud...

Maybe we should ask 'the king'

King says you should stick to an intake, compression, power, and exhaust stroke

I think all of your answers to these general maintenance items can be found by clicking the link below and downloading the 81-84 manual from KB0nly's neat little database.

That's unfortunate. If its your first two stroke trike and assuming all you have ridden is four stroke trikes, it will be night and day in the power department, especially when the power band kicks in. It will be fast enough for you.

Yeah my trike I drive now is a 200m so I want some speed and power. How reliable is an 81 r

yaegerb
03-27-2013, 12:17 AM
depending on the shape you get it in, they are pretty reliable. If you buy a basket case be prepared to shell out some dough to get it running correctly.

Well I was told it runs and drives great just needs a headlight and the white paint removed from fenders

theres a search feature on this website. feel free to use it. all your questions were asked by hatc200x somewhere around the boards. maybe not here, but a simple google search will find em.

btw. thats dean sundahl. if you want to learn a lil something about where your 81r came from, what made it evolve into the later years, and what it was actually built for, do a google search on that name

your 200m or other 4 stroke will probably be a better mud bogger. if you cake mud up in the fins of an air cooled two stroke, you'll overheat very quickly and melt your top end.

x2 on getting it muddy. the 200m is better candidate if you like playing in the mud. for 250 an air fooler is a good deal depending on the overall shape. but if it runs good than grab it up! no rreason not to have something for playing in the dirt with when you get tired of playing in the mud

Well it has been sitting since November but it ran real good before. Im thinking at most it will need a tuneup to run then the rest is just cosmetic fixes

Also wanted to know what could this trike be worth in good shape

Picked up the r today. Cleaned the carb and it runs great but scary to drive it has no brakes. It is definitely a project is there still fenders available for these trikes and if so what is the price of them. Any info is appreciated

Worth more in value (and to your life) with working brakes

If its got no brakes, remove the tires. Trust me, you'll thank me.

Once you fix the brakes, re-install tires.

Well I figured out that the front brakes are completely seized animal pretty sure there is no cable to the back one. Also the clip for the seat is missing would one from a 200es work

they have all kinds of power low end mostly top end is nothing to write home about but there fun. u can ride it like a four stroke almost. my best advise due to the parts being so spendy let alone hard to find is save trailprotrailpro jug bore it 0.30 over. extend or get an extended swing arm, the front end can be hard to keep down. put a pipe on it and some new/better reeds the stock ones are plastic i would go with boisen ive never had an issue with em. and my biggest peace of advise is get some smaller back tires. ive found that allthough you loose some clearance the rideability 20,s is much better(less tippy)

Yes! Buy it! I would buy a 250R non running for that price. I would go get it before someone else does.
