View Full Version : ATC 110 Power Question

I recently rebuilt my 79 ATC 110. It rocks in low range and I think I've solved all the issues (compression, air leaks, jetting, timing, valve/points/plug gaps) and they're all right on.

So, my question is regarding high range. Is high range mostly useless unless you're on absolutely flat ground? I can rip around pretty well in first gear in high range, but anything above first is completely gutless. I live in a pretty hilly area, so I haven't found a flat spot to test it out up to fourth yet.

I'm thinking this is just how it is, being a 110 and all, but just thought I'd see if anyone has any input. Like, do you rip up hills in high range third gear? If so, I have some unresolved issue somewhere.

Thanks in advance.

Marty

Hello

Cool bike. The 110 does not have a ton of power. They were designed for kids that weighed 100 lbs for casual low load riding. A 180 lb person trying to race up a hill in high gear just ain’t gonna make it.

I suggest simply getting a countershaft sprocket that is 1 tooth smaller than what you currently have. This will lower your overall gearing and improve upon your problem.

Hope this info helps.

Well I can run my 90 without problems and it gets me around in high and low. I'm 220. Now my 70 is kinda gutless after 2nd lol I think it may have reached 4th once. But Like barnett has said you drop drop sprocket by a tooth and add low end. Not certain on hills I know Over here it's just flat land. I can see my 90 having problems running hills with me due to it being small. Looks like you're enjoying yourself tho!

I weigh 130 pounds, and my 110 will take me anywhere in high. If I'm going straight up a hill in high, I will be in 1st gear. Unless I'm going fast before I reach the hill, then I get up fine also. Low gear will take me straight up anything. But I don't have any trouble with power. Maybe try putting a bigger sprocket on the engine. I've heard that that helps with speed and power. My 110 took me straight up a hill with my friend sitting on the rear grab bar in 1st gear high.

ATC 110 engine is about 8 HP and the machine weighs 238 lbs. so it's moderately powerful. The engine is in a pretty good state of tune. If carrying a 130-pound rider, the trike can easily start off on a steep uphill incline with the transmission in low-range. It requires more clutch slippage under the same conditions if the transmission is in high-range.

When I first got it, the spark arrestor was absent and low-RPM power was significantly less. It wouldn't even rev up to 6000 before mis-firing.

Make sure the spark arrestor is present.

Good point on the spark arrestor, mine has none. Any tips on an aftermarket replacement?

My power is fine in low range, no problems at all. From the comments on here, I think mine is fine how it is, no need to mess with it. I would like to find an arrestor though, so let me know about that.

If I had seen that 1984 ATC 110 exhaust a couple months ago then it would be installed on my engine now  The spark arrestor provides needed exhaust back-pressure; without which engine low-RPM torque development suffers. This could be the reason why your engine has a tough time moving the trike uphill from a standing start.

I purchased a second exhaust (with broken header pipe) from another 3wheelerworld member. A local muffler shop then cut off its spark arrestor and MIG-welded it to my 110's muffler. In addition to boosting the engine's low-end power, the spark arrestor corrected a lean fuel:air ratio; enabling the engine to rev up to high RPM without mis-firing.

I checked the part numbers and an 84 and 79 are interchangeable. Those look really nice, I want one, but I have another project sucking up all my cash right now. I think I might just try to patch up the one I have and find some kind of arrestor. What do you think about putting a riding lawn mower muffler on it?? Ghetto, but might be cheap.
