I picked up an 83 250r, it came with a parts motor, also came with another motor missing the piston.
I took the cylinder off and cleaned it up a bit, noticed some marks on the walls. It measures up to be stock.
so I guess the decision to be made is...,,,
A)should I get stock size piston and throw in
OR
B)is the cylinder to beat up and should bore it out?

Tell me what ya think, thanks!!

it's definitely time to bore that puppy, unless you want a total piston meltdown. Those gouges are pretty deep.

The local ATV dealer has one of those sitting on the counter of their parts department along with the piston and pin..a show and tell of what NOT to do to your machine..

Makes a great conversation piece..

Hello scottelagrange

As muthey says it needs to be bored. Take it to a shop and have it rough bored until it cleans up. Then you will know exactly what size piston you need. Order piston take it to shop for final hone. Below is a piston supplier.

i figured it would be worth saving. as far as the boreing goes, should i just have it done enough to work again, or get all crazy and throw
a big kit on it. what are the advantages of the larger bore kits?

Hello

That's obviously a personal decision. If you want a kit just buy a 1 mm over or greater cylinder and kit that. Having a stock early 250r cylinder that will clean at around .5 mm is extremely rare why waste it?
