Idk how many 3 wheelers people can say this about like 28 years later, my 1985 350x, which i put new rings in a month or so ago, had never ever been disassembled. it had been assembled in october of 84 i believe and never taken apart since. i broke nearly every engine mounting bolt when disassembling. had to drill some out. terrible process. but let me tell you. there is absolutely nothing wrong with it! didnt need boring, had some wear on the cylinder wall, not enough to cause problems, and just needed a new head gasket and rings. no piston problems.

surprising to anyone?
this trike is now FOR SALE

Doesn't surprise me. So long as the oil is changed regularly, there are good number of engines that don't need boring. My rule of thumb is this; if it was running, cylinder has no ridging, no deep scoring or galling that can't be taken out with a hone, just hone it and install new piston and rings. Have done this on a couple of engines. I do run the bore mic down it to see how out of round it is, just to satisfy myself.

Why did you replace the rings? Smoking? My buddy's '88 Warrior went 22 years before I rebuilt the top end. And although it smoked a tad on deccel, I took it down because a valve adjuster screw and nut backed out of the rocker and lodged in the cam. Cylinder looked good, checked the piston to wall clearence, no ridging, ran the mic down it, honed it, inspected visually, and installed a Wiseco.

Another "rule of my thumb" if you can see crosshatch before you hone it, it is PROBABLY within tolerence.

Anyone change a cam/timing chain in an 85' 350X? JW if you gotta crack the case or how much work it is?

I don't wanna jack this thread, but 85XMAN, I'm only a few miles from you.

As for the thread, doesn't surprise me either. We are talking about Honda's, and also trikes that are taken care of and not beat on. My '83 Big Red's motor has never been touched and I'm the original owner. And no, it doesn't smoke! :)
