About 12 years ago, my dad bought my 1981 Honda 250r ATC and we had it as a project. i recently got it running and i want to register it. we never registered it as long as we've had it. i DO have the pink slip BUT it is damaged and about a third of it is missing. Will i still be able to register it through the California DMV? if so, how? any help is appreciated.

Well in Minnesota I had the same issue, it was never in my name, I had no clue who had it before me.. i even forgot who i had bought it from. I called in the serial number, found it was never stolen AND registered 3 times.. once as an 83 and 2 times as an 84 lol. Anyways I had someone write me up a bill of sale that included make, model, displacement, dry weight, serial. I brought it in and just said i'd like to get my 3 wheeler registered and got collectors plates. That simple in MN. NOW every place is different just so you know. You should really call your dmv and just ask them, they are really nice and will gladly help you!

Man I wish ND was that easy! Ours is a long drawn out process. Need to send a DMV forum to the seller and have him fill it out and get it notarized, then have to get the state patrol over to check it over and check the serial number, Then we have to get pictures of it. And then we can go to the DMV to ask for a title if everything else is done correct. Ugh. What a hassle

you shoudnt have any probs. you'll need a new title in your name so you'll have to pay for a transfer of title. but, because it hasnt been registered in over 7 years, you will not have to pay the back registration fees. you will be into a new title and 2 years of registration for about $100. i did that a couple years ago. i think after that 2 year registration is something like $69

90guy.. that would suck! Can't believe they actually have somebody come out there to look at it. I thought i heard we needed pictures in MN but then I called the DMV.. the lady actually laughed when i asked how do i register a 3 wheeler.. SHE LAUGHED lol.. she said they don't really care that much about them anymore sense there so old. And if its already in your name and you at least registered it once you don't need plates on it. You'll get stopped but there's nothing they can do about it.

I just registered my Auto-X in WI. Takes 5 minutes over the DNR website. Fill in the info. Pay. Print temp receipt and wait for stickers in the mail. I also ordered a license plate from www.battlestuff.com.

Couldn't remember the seller's name so I just put in Rusty Shackelford. Ha ha!

First, welcome to the site...and the Yenko is it a Camaro? I've done this several times in the last couple years. The vehicle (3 wheeler) needs to have both I.D. numbers, frame and engine. If yes then you need to find a DMV that can do VIN number inspections, not all do, and if they don't inspect vin #'s or you don't have both I.D.'s they'll send you to a CHP office, not all CHP offices do VIN inspections. Because this vehicle hasn't been in DMV computer system in the last seven years, don't try and use the damaged pink slip, they'll have you file out a form stating why you don't have pink slip, get the form and answer that question with (ie. lost while moving, or lost in house fire, or lost during a divorce ). Also it doesn't need to start or run either. Pay , pay, pay , you also have to pay the DMV money.

Michigan is great. You can walk in to the grocery store and get orv tags printed for $16.25. All you need is an ID

I love that they put us in the permanent class now... So cheap, so easy, no more hassle with the law.

I'm glad someone got my KOTH reference. Lol.
I use Rusty Shackelford a lot actually. I sign up for stuff as him too.

WI is $35 I think for two years state trails pass. I think all of $5 for the title transfer. A $1 for online convenience fee.

Right now the plates are on sale at battlestuff for $8 - free shipping. Laser etched plastic. Complies with WI and our purple neighbors in MN. They ship very quickly.

Ha! Nope no more registration hassles at least...

Hey Uber... Got a question for ya. I heard the out of state ATV pass went up? A couple friends of mine were heading up to WI to visit family and ride in August but they heard you can't get a three day pass now or something?

At the risk of sounding stupid i feel this still needs to be said. Why bother registering it? seems like a waste of time to me ive owned many many dirtbikes with no title/ Registration etc. ive only ever had one with a title, in my opinion its a waste of time cuz you have to pay taxes.... but different states might have different laws....not that ive ever cared
about the law. From my experience just check the VIN before you buy. If its not stolen you shouldnt have any trouble with the police

Because not everyone can ride it without doing so! Many states require registering them with the DNR for riding them on public lands or trails. Some trails and parks its not required, but not always! The main reason i have is i can ride it everywhere, public or private land it doesn't matter, well obviously if its private land i need permission but just saying. And for $14.50 to have it in my name i can't complain about the cost, its a one time cost that gives it permanent lifetime registration, i can take it anywhere that needs registration, and its got my name tagged to it for as long as i own it. It's more of a pride of ownership to me i guess, if i own something i want proof that its mine.

Its funny this subject came up again, just this past Saturday a friend of mine got hassled riding his 84 TRX250, hes the four wheeled black sheep of the crowd.. LOL... Anyway i spoke with him just last night and was going to post up the results but i figured i will add to this thread.

So he was riding out in the country, on a gravel township road, no reason for it to be a problem but the sheriffs deputy stopped him. They ticketed him for no registration, no proof of ownership, and no license. He left his wallet at home, that was his fault and he accepts it. But the registration he is going to go get a permanent lifetime registration and the see about fighting it. I told him its a lost cause, they had him on a public road, the regs here state that although its a collector of 25+ years of age it may be registered for unlimited use. And the law is using that as "unlimited means on public property, limited is to your own private property"... So he has to pay the fine or try to beat it. Its a lot more then the cost of the lifetime registration!

In my trunk on the 200ES i have a copy of my registration, a photocopy of my drivers license, and a copy of my liability insurance card, all laminated and in a ziplock bag. I haven't had an officer yet that complained about a photocopy of a drivers license, they were just happy to see the documentation.

So moral of the story, if you only ride on your land or trails that don't require it to be registered, then its entirely up to you, personally i like to have a piece of paper that says its mine. I have seen some cases of faked registrations and people registering a vin thats not theirs and then claiming it was stolen. If its in your name and in the computer nobody can walk up and say thats mine im calling the cops.

I have a question that is a little off topic but, is it legal to ride dirt roads ( not main roads) in pa, without getting into any trouble?

I would read through your states regs to be familiar with them.

NO it is not legal.. In PA if your riding anywhere other then privet land you must have your atv titled and registered and wear a helmet

Good link kb0nly, as I just moved from Alabama to PA so this thread caught my attention. Since my ride will likely never leave my backyard, I'm considering doing the Limited Registration, so as if the unthinkable happens, I've got documents saying it is mine, like the others said! So PA gives each ATV a license plate, or is it a sticker? Anyone have a quick picture? So many rules here, life was much simpler in Bama.

Yenko, good luck on your DMV registration, talked to a representative who stated by state law all DMV offices must have a vin verifier, problem is they don't know where to look sometimes and it has to be accessed easily.

I believe in Wisconsin you need to register with the dnr even if you will be riding only on private land. A private only registration can be bought which is good for as long as you own the vehicle. I have one on my raptor for ag use so I can ride the roads without too much hassle. I need to register my 250r but just haven't gotten around to it yet. How is it getting insurance on these things?

depends where you want to ride, on state game lands or dunes. It's best to have a title, clears out the previous owner even if they sold it 25 years ago and some 14yo kids parents want to sue you since its still their machine on paper....
