I'm new here and looking for some tech advise. I have an 86 350x, all stock and original. It sat for a while but when I got it started no prob. Put a clean carb on it from a friend, a new air filter, fresh oil change and a lot of cleaning. Now what I have noticed is after running it i see oil leaking from the carb and eventually drips off the bowl. How would oil be leaking from the carb? Any help would be great.

Could be that there is an external oil leak from the engine that is getting sprayed onto the carb. Or... oil is getting pushed into the crankcase breather hose, and is spraying onto the carb. Just a couple things to look for. Clean everything off really good, run it, watch it, and hopefully find that leak.

Everything around it is dry, even the top half of the carb. It looks almost like its coming out of the bowl on the front side. I've never seen this before.

Is the bike smoking or running poorly?

The only possibility for oil to be dripping off of your carb is if it leaking from the top end and running/dripping back and onto the carb. Check the top end for leaks.

Are you sure it's oil? Did you flush out the gas tank really well? Old nasty gas can look pretty orange/brown. Was it possibly old gas that was still in the tank and leaked?

I've run almost 2 tanks through it since I got it a couple weeks ago. I'll check to see what's in the tank. So far everything up top is dry.

Check the air filter. My 225dx had oil coming into the air box from the crankcase overflow tube, because the oil was overfilled - and the oil then made its way into the carb from the air box.

Just finished cleaning the tank as best I could. Not real easy to do. I used an old trick of a couple handfuls of quarter size rocks to break the trash loose in the tank. That's where my problem is. Looked like thinned out oil but just broken down rust from the tank and my bowl is leaking. Gonna get a rebuild kit just to have and replace the seal on the bowl.

The rebuild kit should contain a new needle and seat, replace those to keep it from leaking after you clean out all the old crud.

You should also check into getting the tank sealed. Try a local radiator shop. I had one. Of my tanks done with red cote from a local radiator shop, it's been 6 years and not a problem. The total job only cost 50 bucks.

Oh yeah, I was thinking plastic tank, but if it's steel you should definitely get it fixed up. I replaced the tank on my 1980 ATC185 with a plastic one back in the 90s... cost about $90 and that hurt.

I'm checking on that today. Got some rust spots on the outside so I think I'll have it soda blasted. I'd like to save it. It's original.
