I finished weeding out my pepper garden this evening and got to thinking:wondering. What are others "nurturing" to maturity in their bag yard and what might they be making with it that's different from the norm. I started growing hot peppers 3 years ago when a co-worker & I decided order some seeds off the internet (from pepper joes) and grow them to spice up some dishes. I ended up with way more peppers than I knew what to do with so I searched the internet for something I could make with them before they went bad. Found a recipe for pepper jam! Instant hit with friends and co-workers (who end up purchasing most of my labors) Now I have over 75 plants of various hot peppers from jalapeno to ghost peppers. Great on crackers with cream cheese, on burgers/sandwiches, and I even use it as a glaze on pork and chicken. So what's in your garden & what do make that might be unique or different?

So what did you have? I put up 36" rabbit fence around my garden to keep them wild critters out of mine. (mostly rabbits)

My gardens pretty sad this year, peppers won't grow, tomatoes are way behind, peas already come and gone beets are very small. Although I am really good at growing rocks and weeds.
My favorite is late winter/early spring. We bust out the 55 gallon drum evaporator and start tapping maple trees for maple syrup!

I went on the light side this year. I got strawberries, thornless blackberries, sweet corn, 18 tomato plants, 12 broccoli, 6 cucumber plants, 3 zucchini, 12 bell peppers, 2 habanero, 12 jalapeņo.

We make jam, salsa, pizza sauce, pasta sauce, pickle spears, wine , and tomato juice from out garden.

The only other things I planted besides peppers are watermelons. Lesson learned on planting them in the same garden as my peppers. They have taken over (smothered 2 rows of pepper plants. I keep pulling them back and pruning them. If I do melons next year it will be in a separate location. Thats why on the first post the picture of the garden at the far end looks "full". 4 plants and they just took over. Even have a couple that grew outside the fence!

Here are 2 links to one of the coolest sites for odd items. (Well i think it's cool). The site isn't easy to navigate though. So you have to be patient. Anything from all kinds of tubing, plexiglass sheets, Teflon (for your chain tentioners & rails), PVC stuff, plastic caps etc. It's insane.

First is for square watermellon boxes:

The square watermelon box looks cool, but not for $110.
