All suggestions are appreciated. My ytm225 3 wheeler was running great but at times the starter switch wouldn't work. I starting tracing the wires out and while working on it all of a sudden I lost all power. Even the power to nutral lite went out. I can cross the two post on the solenoid and the engine will turn over but will not start. It was running fine until this happen. I have checked the fuse and all connections. What can cause it to lose power like this?

Hi, if you checked all connections, maybe a wire broke inside the insolation, you might want to check voltage, continuity/ohms with a multimeter/voltmeter tester if you have no power to your neutral light maybe the same for the on/off switch or something like that.
Here's a link to a wiring diagram I found on this site http://www.3wheelerworld.com/content.php/211-Yamaha-225DR-wiring-diagrams

What year/model? DX?
You're going to need to get a meter and start tracing you red wire out. That is your main 12 volt constant wire. Even with a bad ground a meter will tell you if its good or not with the black to chassis. Check the ignition switch plug.

I had a 750 with the same prob turned out to be the cdi.. Are you still geting spark?

I wonder if the key switch is stuck in the off position you might try unplugging the switch and pull starting it if the switch is stuck in off position it won't start at all with switch plugged in.

I have started tracing this morning but so far no luck. I have power to the solenoid and the engine will turn over if I cross the post but nothing to the rest of the engine. plug on switch is good.

How will it act if the solenoid goes out? It did blow the main fuse but I've replaced that.

Do you have voltage at your main switch? If not you have an open circuit between battery and mainswitch double check your fuse if you have voltage at your fuse and none at switch that wire between fuse and switch is bad. You can check voltage at the rectifier/regulator connection that would help pointing if the problem is between rectifier and fuse or between rectifier and switch.

If you have power going to mainswitch check if you have power going out of mainswitch, maybe your switch is defect.

Could the rectifier be bad?

No I d'ont think so your bike could run with a bad rectifier you would burn lightbulbs frequently.

Not sure if you can blow the cdi with a bad rectifier but you would have power for your starter relay anyway and your neutral light would work (if it's not blown).

Do you know what caused your fuse to blow?

no. I heard a pop like a short and then no power to anything past the solenoid.

I'm not sure if yours is like the diagram posted above(not same year) but probably similar. On the diagram the starter circuit has an independent wire directly to the battery. If you have no power to the other circuit (the one with the fuse) you will have no power to the cdi and no spark at the plug, starter will turn engine won't start like if you jump starter solenoid/relay with the switch at off position. You can try removing the fuse test with your meter from where the fuse connects and to the rectifier connection if you have good contact move to the mainswitch. If the fuse keeps blowing check if you have contact with ground. Troubleshooting may take a little time but once you find the short it will be easy to fix. Good luck

Test an see if there's still spark.. Test the main relay with a battry you should here a click witch would be the magnit if you don't hear it go to autozone an buy one there like 15 bucks max..
