I picked up this 2005 450r basket case for $300 yesterday. Not really looking but couldn't pass it up for the price. Motor was, and still is completely disassembled due to the kicker breaking the clutch side cover and center case - this is a puzzle I don't care to try to figure out. I have some ideas for this roller but it is a future project and will have to wait its turn. Will be selling off some unneeded parts - all motor parts are available now. Will also be taking off and selling the carb, radiator and wiring. Email me at c08howard@bellsouth.net if interested in any parts. Here's some pics.

Id put a 2 stroke motor in it honestly. I knew a guy with an 05 and his motor just to rebuild by him self was going to cost about $1,200.

As of now, it paid to come to me. Sold off most parts I didn't want/need and I'm up about $30 with more to sell. This project is off to a good start $ wise.

I'm sure that would make a nice bike but no 2-stroke for me. I'm a thumper all the way.

Why not go 2 stroke? Put a liquid cooled 250r motor in and you have a beast...soooo much simpler to work on. I am biased by the way 2 stroke for life for me lol. Just more bang for your buck. Anyhow good luck with whatever you decide, looks like you have a great start.
