Well eight years ago I lost my 81 250r in Hurricane Katrina. And yesterday just happened to be looking on craigslist and came across an 82 picked it up today now ready to get it restored. Bike is in running condition start on first kick needs to be gone through typical brakes transmission just go through it and make sure everything is okay. My question is I know on my old 250 I switched to a 40 mm flat side carburetor is it still a good move or should I go with something else this was years ago.

Sorry to hear that, can only imagine what else was lost. Welcome to the site, hopefully one of the air cooler guys can answer that question.

40mm is probably overkill, go for a 36mm off a liquid R. Or 38mm if your thinking of upgrading to a 300 kit.

i concur. 40mm with no other mods is very overkill. a nice cheap upgrade is the 83/84 250R 30mm keihin, or the 85/86 34mm keihins. but if youre gonna upgrade the carb, you'll see the most benefit if you use other components that help your motor breathe better (exhaust, reeds, porting, airbox lid removed, K&N) along with your carb upgrade. good luck and sorry you lost your fooler!

Same opinion as above. First upgrade was to a 36mm, the again to a 40mm. The gains from the 40mm over the 36mm were not very significant until I starting adding additional upgrades.

I concur; a 34mm off an '85 is ideal for the '82 Fooler. I ran just that setup, along with open airbox, K&N, Boyeson Reeds, and a Bill's pipe back in the day.
If you're interested, I have the red pipe guard that goes under the seat/tank that is missing on your new toy. $15 shipped. http://i679.photobucket.com/albums/vv159/4x4van/ATV%20parts/PICT0381.jpg (http://s679.photobucket.com/user/4x4van/media/ATV%20parts/PICT0381.jpg.html)
Leave me a PM if interseted.

And it has the machine info on the side! Definitely a step above what my fooler had when i picked it up.
