1966 CJ-6 with a factory Perkins Diesel. Had been sitting in a field since 1977. I now have it running but not yet driving.. Very rare Jeep with the Perkins 192 Diesel.

Stopping for fuel after loading it up-

That would be in the era when Kaiser Fraser owned "Jeep" I think. That is really cool, what are the plans for it? Ditch the oil bath air filter ASAP.

The Perkins is swapped in. I looks nice in there. The 66 had 2 choices of power plants. The 134 f head or the dauntless v6. Nice score.

I beg to differ on the swap........ There were 3 engine options in 66. The other option was the Perkins 192 4 cylinder. The Prefix of the VIN/serial # denotes this as a CJ-6 open body diesel from the factory. It is number 449 built between 61 & 69 when the Perkins was offered. Estimated that probably about 600 or less were built in that time period, but Kaiser was terrible about records. There are records from 61-63 but anything past that is gone. According to Jim Allen's Illustrated Jeep buyers guide it's estimated that less that 3k CJ5's and CJ6's were built with the Perkins in that run between 61 and 69. The introduction of the Jeepster C-101 and the Dauntless V-6 seriously cut into sales of the CJ-6 and the Perkins was never popular from the start so adding a more powerful V6 to the line up reduced sales of the diesel even further. I did my homework. The second owner ( who I bought it from ) said this one came out of Canada originally but spent almost its entire life in Idaho and Washington.

Ive been wanting to do the EJS for years. I havent missed a TDS in the last 8 yrs....I go to the colorado river north of Yuma Az to wheel and at the Superstition Mtns in Imperial Valley. Im also lucky enough to have epic boulders 3 miles from my house. Ive wheeled there sense Iv been 17yrs old. My 1st car was a 53 M38A1. That was 32yrs ago. I had quite a bit of rock and dirt under my tires. Love the jeep thing.

Wow! I'm not a Jeep Junkie - I can tell a CJ5 from a CJ7 from a Scrambler and that's about it so it's no surprise I had no ideas they had diesels in 66.

That thing is BITCHIN'!

The cj6 is rare by itself let alone with the diesel. Good score !.

My first was and still is my 52 CJ-3A although it's been neglected the last few years due to life complications.

Chopped off the severely bent and broken front part of the frame this weekend and fabbed up new frame rails and a bumper with winch mount. My cousin is pretty good and bending and melting metal.

I see it still has the Ross bellcrank steering. Heck while you have it apart toss on a Saginaw box. Like that new bumper. That will stiffin up that front end too.

Thanks guys. It does have the old Ross box and I am going to leave it. There is some play in the linkage, but that can be fixed. The box is ok otherwise. I considered a Saginaw upgrade but decided since this one is rare I would leave it "stockish". After the winch mount was fabbed, it will be hard to upgrade to saginaw anyway. Only reason the front of the frame got replaced is because it was trashed beyond repair.

You can still fit the saginaw and have a winch. I went from the ross to sag manual to power sag. Now its 1 finger steering. It was one of the best mods Ive done to the ol willys.

Cool jeep! I had a cap blow off one of those power saginaw boxes one time. There was a crack in it and it let loose, that sucked. Easy to rebuild though

Great job getting it back on the (off) road. That diesel must be unstoppable. How does it compare in weight to the gas I-6? I really like the single cab look on those streched Jeeps like the Scrambler option was. Call me weird but I also like the look of the old Jeeps with the tallest, skinniest and most agressive tires money can buy. Just me ;-)

Jeepermc
11-05-2013, 01:31 PM
It has plenty of torque at idle and just above but it doesn't have much on the top. I haven't spent much time with the I-6 except in fuel injected TJ's which is a completely different animal. It will get some tall skinnies back on the factory 16's once the ones that are on it wear out. No plans to change the top configuration though.

I've done a few things on the jeep lately. Put a good Odyssey battery in it. Swapped the front springs to some 2.5" Rancho springs that I had. Much better stance. Also had it out on the road few more times and played in the snow a bit one night.

I just saw your thread and I had to respond, I am jeep nut too! Thats a nice CJ6 you got there, pretty rare beasty. I have a fairly rare beast too, Its a 53 CJ3A, the last year they made the short hood flat fender (after that year, it was the high hood Cj3B and the CJ5). Its all stock except for the paint and the Warn winch, I duplicated some of my pics lol. The Rubicon is a 2010, its my daily driver. The pic of the 53 facing off with my 85 Big Red is when I was running some Carlisles trying to save the tread on my original Ohtsus before I found some more original Big Red wheels and Ohtsus to run (I hate any other tire and wheel on a Big Red lol). There are better pics of my Big Red on my profile. The 53 has an original Harrison heater, NOS Warn overdrive kit, the roll bar is from a CJ5 (oops, forgot that wasn't original equipment, Jeeps didn't have roll bars in those days lol).

I have rebuilt a few of the old CJ's, they are all steel and iron, wonderful machines and its funny how I see all these UTV's being built these days and being used for the same purposes that the old Jeeps were built for. With the ATC and the old Jeep, I have absolutely no use for the newer 4 wheelers or UTV deely whoppers like a Kawasaki Mule, Rhino, blah blah blah....plus, I can run down the road at 60 mph in my Jeep LEGALLY (Yes, with the Warn Overdrive my Jeep will actually hit 65 with the little 60 horse Go Devil motor :p ). Try that with a Rhino :naughty:

AWESOME RIG!! I love any JEEP, and my GPA is a Caterpillar mechanic(Perkins worked with CAT quite a bit) so this one takes the cake for me. Out of all the obscure and rare jeeps I do know of, I had no idea you could ever get a Perkins in one, thank you!!

Do read JP magazine? I bet they would eat that thing up for a feature

I do read JP. I met Pete last year at EJS but that was before I had this Jeep. They actually just did a feature on a Perkins CJ-5 in the current issue of JP. Written by Jim Allen for the "Old Iron" type section where they feature a basically restored rig and then give you a broad overview of the production of it.

Ha that's awesome, always wanted to me Trasborg and the the rest of the guys! Easter Jeep Safari would be awesome too.... I haven't subscribed for a while but I'm on the lookout for another two door XJ so I'll be back to it soon!

I've built several XJs and ZJs but my favorite was my 04 WJ V8 with Quadratrac II and the vari-lock gerotor axles. Only put a 4 inch and 33s on that one but it would plow through anything!
