is rm stator the only place to get a new cdi box or will i have to get a used one off ebay:wondering

Do NOT use aftermarket CDI's of any brand on your 250r! I am one of many many many R owners who tried aftermarket CDI's and had issues. Most common issues are severe kick-back when starting the engine and breaking up at high RPM that acts like jetting but is impossible to cure with jetting adjustments.

The only ignition upgrade that works well on an R is the '01 CR250 ignition upgrade.

If that is not an option for you, find yourself a good used OEM CDI for your R.

And FYI, the '85 CDI is unique to '85. You cannot use the 86-later CDI's unless you use and '86 wiring harness.

I will send a message to Pickle ( Mike ) at the shop and see if the one CDI is still there. I think it was a 85 model. I personally won't get out there before Sunday.
