I have a 1985 big red 250 I bought 2 months ago. It goes through all the gear fine but to up or down shift I have to do it with my foot- it doesn't spring into gear- it that makes sense. I read on here it could be the shift return spring? I have removed the left crank case cover nd have no idea what I looking for? I have downloaded the Manual but again am not sure what to look for? Any help or advice?

I had the same problem with my project sx, and just replaced mine a few weeks ago. The pin is located behind the shift shaft, and once you pull out the shaft you will see it.
If you scroll down to the bottom of my thread, you will see what im talking about.

Also, do a search, there are a bunch of threads on the the subject.

Thanks for the pics and help. I check out mine and it looks fine same with the spring? The pin was losse? I could spin it out by hand? I was thinking of just ordering the spring and pin and just see what happens but nothing appers to be broke.

That's good that yours was just loose, so you can just tighten it up, and was not broken like mine was. Before I tore into the side of the case, I went a head, and ordered both the new pin, and gasket. I'm glad I did, because you can see from the pics in my thread as to what I found.

Excellent find.
My pin was bent but not visible.
I had to sdpin it slowly in a drill to see the wobble.

There is also another threaded pin in the end of the shift drum that can also come loose,
more common on the sx models.

A few of us went thru this last year or so ago and flyingw, among others, posted some great pix.
