1985 Honda 350 x cloth cover issues?

I have a 1985 Honda 350 x clutch cover problem, when I installed the cover everything fit like a glove but when I tried to kick start the bike I felt something snap so I took the cover off and saw that the cam follower had snapped in two, I'm ordering another one but would appreciate some advice as to how I can prevent this from happening again. Is there a certain way it's suppose to be positioned?.
