View Full Version : New guy here!! Doing a CRF 230 motor/carb swap into a 84 200x

So while back I bought a 200x with a blown engine and for some reason I always wanted to put a crf 230 engine into it, I liked the idea of an electric start and a bit more cc's. I found a complete running bike for a decent price so I bought it, engine smokes a bit but ill be fixing that.

So fare I have the engine and carb in the frame and the carb is attached to the stock air box. I had to trim the frame to fit the carb in the frame. The motor bolted right in except for the head motor mounts. BUT The chain was way to close to the side of the frame, hardly 1\16, so I moved the whole engine to the right by 3/16, which was as much as I really could, now I have about 1/4 which is still close but alot better.

Also, I have a 10 inch rim up front, something I modded!!

Heres a few pictures, Ill keep updating you guys if your all interested! lol

Hows it ride? Looks like a really nice bike. But wouldnt cutting away the frame there compromise the rigidity and durability? Plus it opens up and exposes the inside of the frame allowing the elements to get inside and potentially rusting from the inside out.

It rides awesome with the 18" tires and the +3 rear axle (spacers) havent tried it with the crf motor yet. I will be making a piece that fits in the slot that I cut out and weld it there, it will close that hole and make it very close to as strong as it was if not as strong as it was.

Wen I eye it out it looks good, haven't got a chain on and adjusted yet.. I just ordered the smalles front sprocket I could get for the crf. Wen I get it its the first thing Im gonna do.

Heres a couple more pictures, started to fab the slip on, most of the wiring is done, just have to build a battery box. Put it all together to se how it would look as well.

Tonight I finished mounting the wiring, built a braket to hold the CDI box and volt regulator in place.

I am looking to do a swap, does anyone know where to find a 250r or 200x frame?

Past couple days I finished up the battery box and a bracket to hold the solenoid, happy with how it turned out!
It still turns and still has spark :)
Before I started it up I wanted too clean the gas tank nicely, didn't have time for that yet.
Also put the chain on, as fare as my eye can see it looks good!
Can't wait to try it out!!

Took it out for its first test drive today!! Im very impressed that the gearing is very good! I can wheelie it in all gears haha all the way too 6th gear!
A bit of tuning too do and still stuff to add on it, back brake, chain sliders etc. Drives awesome feels very solid, could do donuts on pavement!!

Well its pretty much complete now, made a bracket so I can use the front calliper of the crf for the rear calliper of the 200x, the dual piston calliper sure brakes awesome!!
Got a couple pics.

That is so cool man! Any finished pics of the frame notch? Any idea on true top speed yet? What gearing did you run?

A-Martin
01-12-2014, 05:52 PM
Thanks brap! Ill get pictures wen I get a chance, gearing is 13/40 on 18" tires, It torques alot, Im sure I could run 13/38 easily. Im curious on the speed as well im gonna get a buddy to follow me see what it can do. Also have a GoPro video, Ill upload it on youtube and post it here.

Yes E-start is hella nice!!

200es are the slowest, a 200 will beat a 200es, and I'm sure the 200x would be even faster than the 200.

Good job it looks great. All I need is time and money and Im going to start building.

Awesome build man! I have a friend with a CRF 230, so I will have to show him this as he knows I am an avid ATC fan, especially the 200X. He says the bike will do about 65-70 if he drafts, and the 200X engine has similar power output to that of the 230 (both rated about 18 stock), so I'd imagine performance would be similar to that of a stock 200X, other than you'll probably be able to spin the engine to a higher RPM. I was reading once that the 230 engine is actually based on that of the old X and and XR motors, and they do look pretty similar so to the naked eye someone would probably think that was stock. Hell, if you paint it black, you'd really fool them.

Nice build :D

Just installed a new wheel/tire set up for winter! 4Snow's in the back on 9 inch rims with a front mohawk with snowmobile studs on a 10 inch rim. Rides so much better!! I down sized one tooth in front to go from 18" to 22" tires!
Also got some head lights running and another little nic nacs!!

Looking great! If you don't mind me asking, what is the rim you used on the front? I'd like to swap to a 10" front on my 200X.

Its a 10 inch rim with 2+3 offset with a 4x156 bolt pattern, ktm, polaris and yamaha sports quad have that bolt pattern. I had to modifie my front hub though, as you can see in the picture, I cut off the orginal holes, cant find a picture of the finished product lol but it ended up dead center!

Sweet. I was thinking of doing the same thing, those wheels (4x156 2+3) can be had for $25 free shipping all over eBay, and I have an extra front hub.

i was just about to buy an 84 honda 200x ..... motor was shocked for only $100 but then i recieved the worst news the kids tells me that his dad won't let him sell it cuz its not his.

i didn't even know that it wasn't his. the kid said it was his dads. He also had a 85 honda 200x for $250 kick start stripped but he sold that so he offered me this 84 for $100.(( i told about earlier in this post)))

I was going to do a swap like this if i found a motor to buy to put in it.

You did a great job on that swap, I would love to have a 230 in my x. I may have to try that front wheel, thanks for the tip.

Very nice, Been wanting to do that for awhile. A side note though, to help others when doing this, I'm pretty sure you can just use the 200x intake & carb on the 230 head! That way you don't have to notch the frame.
