Hey Howdy,

Is there anything forum users and visitors can to do to preserve, or use less bandwidth? Do some types of posts eat up more bandwidth than others or is it simply the number of users?

Aside from purchasing more bandwidth, which I would encourage anynone who enjoys the forum to make a contribution for these expenses, what are some things people can do to stretch the available bandwidth a little further?

Attactchments use the most bandwidth. If you can host a picture on a personal account and then put it in the message using the [ img ] tags it would help out a lot. We also use a lot of bandwidth in pictures sent via PM's. If you can email pictures instead of sending them via a PM that would help also.
Thanks

does stuff like having a pic in your signature use alot of bandwidth? what about custom avatars? if you wanted to limit custom avatars to pics of atvs, i'd be the first to take mine down. do the avatars that have movement take up more space?

If the picture is is hosted on another site it don't use up the 3ww bandwidth. The things that take up the most bandwidth is Pictures ( as attatchments, avatars, ect ) hosted on the forums account.

Thats what I was getting at. We have a "Readers Rigs" page for people to post their rides, so maybe we should end this practice of "hey everybody, post all of your XX pics" posts. "Im thinking about buying a XX, so I need everyone to post pics so I actually know what one looks like" does sound a bit brainless when they can easily go to the Readers Rigs page. We also have a problem with people posting the same pictures agian, and again, and again, and again... Without mentioning names, Ive seen some peoples rides in so many posts with the exact same pictures, I could identify them easier than my own!

Another pet peeve I have is when some guy in Ca. is selling a trike, that he will not ship, and 15 kids with no drivers licenses from the east coast are all posting "show me pictures" as though the classifieds are there to entertain them.

Then youve got the "I am bored so I thought Id play with my camera and post pictures of my bird, my favorite rock in the yard, and an empty beer can because I have nothing better to do" posts.

C'Mon people, Im just asking for a little common sense and consideration. Moderators have enough to do without having to form a picture judgement panel and evaluate every picture that is posted, as to whether it has any value to the board. Be considerate, and use some sense as to whether the picture youre about to post is worth the bandwidth its using. Honestly, I also wish a few people would use the same citeria in their text posts.

I belong to couple other boards, and they dont even allow uploading of pictures. You can only post pics if you upload them to your own url, which I usually do here, anyways. That may be the best solution if this becomes a common problem.

You could do something only 3 wheeler related for picturs like .org or something only related to the sport of riding? Just trying to throw out some ideas! :?

I agree that hosting photo's would be a good idea, but the site needs content. thats why people come here instead of the other site. There's always something going on here. I think everyone should pony up a $20.00 every year. and help pay for the bandwidth. But sometimes that picture of the empty beercan is the only thing to check out. Just my 2 cents worth.

Mywifeknows, This is a "for instance" not dircted to any specific post. Im not complaining about the seller. Im complaining about people who ask for all kinds of pictures, or for that matter asking seller 10 million other questions, when there is not even the slightest remote chance that they will ever buy. People with too much time to kill, dont seem to mind wasting other's.

Content is of little value if you have to sift through a truckload of crap to find it.

The way the board is setup, the avatars have to be uploaded to the server for them to work at all. This is because if it is hosted somewheres else, we have no control over the content of the picture other then banning the member which I personally believe is a little extreme for most cases, but definetly not out of the question for some.

Howdy is right though, if at any time it is possible to host a picture elsewhere (IE if you have your own webspace) use the IMG tag's to host it there, and then it won't be using the boards bandwidth alone.

I think there is alot of confusion here on how bandwidth works, so I'm going to attempt to explain it. Theres gonna be alot of computer terms but I'll try to explain it the best I can.. The first page of this thread is 98803 bytes, this about equal to 90KB or so. Now, every picture that is in a thread is loaded atleast once everytime someone views the thread. We have the 3WW banner at the top, the reply/new topic buttons, the PM/Email buttons, the smileys, the peoples avatars, ect. So lets add all this up and see how much we come up with for the first page of this thread. Page size: 90KB, There are 12 buttons roughly 1KB a peice (Add reply, new post, PM, Email, IM buttons, ect), roughly 17 avatars at 5KB a peice is about 85KB, and 6 smileys, which don't even equal anything worth figuring. Now, theorticly speaking, lets add 6 attachements to the thread, each one at around 70kb. This brings us to a grand total of around 607KB for each page. Now, lets multiply this number by the amount of times the thread has been viewed, which is about a 125. And you come up with about 78MB worth of bandwidth for ONE thread. We have roughly 30,000mb of bandwidth which seems like alot, but when you use 78mb worth of bandwidth or better in one thread (And there is around 16,000 threads on the forum as of now), it adds up extremly fast. We've been using on average (Last month) of around 1,000 a day and sometimes a little more. The main multiplier is of course the amount of times a thread is viewed, along with the size of it. A normal thread (Without attachments) with an equal amount of views is going to be alot less then 78mb.

I hope you guys understood that, I just wanted to clarify it since I know that some of you didn't understand exactly how it worked. I don't by anymeans want anyone to use the board less because they are worried about overloading it, if its one thing we can handle its growth. You still can (And I would encourage you) to post well thought out and informative posts like this community always had, but I do ask you try to limit the amount of attachments if possible. Or, if you know how to add compression to your images to make them smaller a smaller file size this would also be helpful.

Thanks to the simply AMAZING amount of donations we've gotten since yesterday, I think we will be upgrading to a full dedicated server soon which will almost totally eliminate this problem anyways :D

If it gets too bad...we could always do something like EXriders does. Instead of posting pics...they post the URL to the pic and you have to click on it and go to the host's site and view it instead of using EXriders' bandwidth.

Howdy, HondaATC....if you want to PM me with an address so me and a friend could make donations, that would be great :-P

Howdy - Maybe do something like make up shirts and sell them for $20. A simple shirt can be made up for a lot less so the rest could go towards more bandwidth.

Thats what we are talking about, but you dont even have to do it as links.
You simply put in your post the url of your picture with square brackets like this "[" instead of this "(" with (img) before it and (/img) after it. In my case I would post (img)http://home.neo.rr.com/timtim/picturename.jpg(/img), and my pictures show up right inside the post, from the freespace Roadrunner gives me, same as if they are uploaded without putting the burden on the the site.

If you go to my Quad-Z post in the quads forum, youll see a bunch of pciturrees, and if you right click on the picture to get "properties", youll see none of them are uploaded to 3WW but simply uploaded to my Roadrunner freespace.

Being young and poor is gay, I'm gonna try and scrape up a 20 here soon though and I'll try to keep senseless posts to a minimum. Glad I was able to entertain some people in chat though. I was going through some serious withdrawal syptoms and I think I went a little bit mental. The fellas in chat can attest to that.

I think the better way to do it (rather then spending money on shirts to sell) is to have like contributor under a members name that has given money. That is how another board that I go to gives recognition. Just a thought (cheap for the owners) ;)

Blazerone22's comments are pretty right in my mind and I just sent in my donation via the paypal portal on the main site - except for the beercan part - but hey, I did post a couple of pictures of my vaction/wedding, so maybe I'm guilty of it too - but I did try to make it at least a little ATV related by throwing in a few pics of the DS bikes and the wolverine. The danger in making this a purely ATV board is that you can make it look too steril and cold. You do need to keep things on track, I dont deny that, but a little digression once in a while only makes the experience here that much more rich. I do think maybe we are blowing this out of perportion though, the site was only down for half a day. We can all live our lives without 3WW for at least a little while and not have to jump off a bridge if its down. I'm a very visual person, I love looking at pictures and especially taking them. The more picture related content, the more interesting this will be. I think it helps us "keep it real" not only with the many people I've met here on the board but with ATVing in general. I love to see everybodys projects, I love to see how they did it. I use it for inspiration on my own next project. I love to see where everybody is riding and the different types of conditions they encounter. I love looking at TimSr's race pictures (allthough he's sometimes loath to post them) as well as everybody elses. Its all good stuff and I hope we dont try to limit it - that would be a real shame.
