Anyone have a work around for removing the rotor? Or is it absolutely necessary to have the tool? Where would I get one?

Are you talking about the flywheel puller (http://www.amazon.com/Motion-Pro-08-0026-Flywheel-External/dp/B000OO2Q86/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388277940&sr=8-2&keywords=atc+puller) or lock nut tool (http://www.amazon.com/Spanner-Counter-Balancer-CRF450R-CRF450X/dp/B00A7ZZDP0/ref=pd_sim_sbs_indust_6)?

While I'm not going to say it CAN'T be done any other way, it's the least likely to result in damage. Unless, of course, you have your own mill and lathe :)

If you mean on the clutch side:

The tool is well worth the money. I think it was like $10 at dealer. What you can do is cut up an old socket. it needs to be the right size so the inside of the socket is where the 4 slotted areas are on that funny looking nut. use a dremel with a cutoff wheel to cut your 4 teeth where they need to be, so they are about a 1/4 inch tall. then cut out the in-between parts.

easiest way to remove is with impact. not much torque on that nut. that is why there is a lock washer behind it with that tab you have to move out of the way.

keep that in mind during re-assembly. get a good bite and then tighten to line it up with locking tab.
