View Full Version : does polaris suck?

I think they do except for the 400l and the preditor.

I have never cared for the polarises myself, But I will admit I have been beaten by a few. It's all too easy to get gobs of horsepower out of them, and with the automatic tranny it makes for a very effective drag machine. I had a freind with a 400l that could beat pretty highly modified 440 banshees. They have come a long way since machines like the cyclones were around.

They all suck. My uncles friend put $2000 into a 00 sportsman 500 in the first 10 months he's owned it because everything kept breaking. P.O.S. :!: :!:

The new preditor is going to kick ass. Their other quads are good at what they are made for.

Heres a question: Why are you asking 100 retarded questions with your little friends?

Polaris does not suck, No quad manufacturer in general "sucks" & Polaris is far from it. Theyve perfected the Automatic Quad world. I lvoe it when people talk about "belt slippage" on Polarises and then they say they are looking at the Yamaha & Kawasaki Automatics....haha.

polaris vs yamaha chevy vs ford ride whatever you want and quit asking stupid questions.

Yamaha250 probably said what I think, but Jim said best as far as I can read. Yet another dumb question.

WHAT A QUESTION......Does Polaris suck.......hahahahahaha........Yeah...Jim hit the nail on the head.....what a joke on the question.....hey guys i got a question.....Does Honda make 400ex's????? or is it a Yamaha 400ex and a Honda Raptor???

I will never in my life buy a polaris. I believe in buying quality, and I think Polaris is far from it.

Feel free to explain why you think so.

Polaris vs. Yamaha vs. Suzuki

Theyre all the same damn thing!!! SOme have more features than the others!!! When will people learn that?

Let's take a little older ones. The 4x4's were chain driven. So when the chain and sprockets wear out, it's a lot of money, and a pain to replace. The batteries they use are junk, my uncle went through many batteries on his. The newer ones. 01 Trailblazer - rear brakes decided to just stop working, broke the swingarm, chain snapped and broke cases (so much for concentric drive). And these are just the things I know about.

They are easy to ride, and do have decent suspension, but are way too unreliable. Now for just putting around the yard, they are fine, but my riding lawnmower can do that.

12-17-2002, 09:22 AM
Allright:

Chain Drive: Frotn Chain Drive has been obsolete from Polaris ATV's since 1998 (and yes trhey did have front & rear hsafts on the sportsmans before that)...Yes I agree that is one of the stupidest thins ever & it should have -always- been shaft drive.

Batteries: I dont know how a battery can be bad, a battery is a battery....but if others have experienced this (ive never heard of it) than maybe Polaris's charging system is to blame.

And this 01 Trailblazer........WHoever rode this must be jumping off cliffs or this thing had to be ridden harder than $2 street whore for the swingarm to snap. Chains are a common problem, and Polaris's concentric drive system is not flawless (but what is?) but it certainly is better than a regular non adjusting chain system.

having spent 2 and a half hours on my wife's golf cart plowing snow i gotta say it kinda blows, it didn't break down (left arm gave up from manual lifting),,, driveway is clean,,,,
it starts on demand- 3 years now and i havn't had to do anything to it other then grease it. ( it is a gas hog by the way,,,)
the plow is a real whore to put on,,,, 20 minutes of my life ! (wow !)

lets see,,, what else..., oh yeah, my wife's choice of machines (400explorier) gets to pull my dumb butt out of the woods on average a couple times a year. ( she really enjoys that too- lol)

What has it been used for? Plowing and putting around or trail riding? How much has it been used? Just wondering.

it's a 2 stroker, water cooled 400 1999. she bought it at that white star auction near us from a dealer in traverse city mi. he had saturated the market up there and couldn't sell the last one he had so wife picked it up for 4600.00 (tax included), full factory warrenty and polaris has upheld their end of the bargen by notifing us on 3 different no-charge updates.
plows michigan snow in the winter (only time i ride it and i don't baby it) + the mrs. rides it the rest of the time. i am a thinking we have at least 30-35 riding trips since she has bought it.
we don't ride hard but she always runs it in 4 wheel drive,,, all the time !
been a good quad for us all around.

I have no idea where you came to that conclusion. There are 2 Polarises (TB250/TB400), 2 Yamahas (Blaster, Banshee), No Hondas, No Suzukis, No Cannondales only 3-4 of the "little guys" make them now adays. Wheres 10 years ago, The "big guys" all had atleast 2 performance 2 strokes, Polaris having atleast 5.<~~~ We are talking ATV's only here.....although Light weight pistons like the ones found on the CRF's and the Raptor are allowing the engines to rev quicker and higher nowadays, not as fast as 2 strokes but a good bit faster than the orginal 4 strokes.

meaning that 2 strokes are becoming cleaner and cleaner, look at some of the new sleds. I didn't say they were making a comeback, I said that they may.

hey John, looks like the Mrs redefined "liquid cooled"! Are these taken in the wooded part of the Badlands?

jeswinehart
12-28-2002, 07:56 AM
yes they are tim. the area due north of the parking lots. on one of those truck routes.
the 2 strokers ain't loosing no ground overseas from what i've seen.
probbly cause they are a little cheaper to buy + maintain.
in the phillipines (the mrs. home country) they add a side car to the small cycles ( sorta make it a 3 wheeler-lol) and ferry people around.
they are the most popular short haul (10 mile ) mode of transportion in that country. and they pile on the people also,,, i have seen as many as 6 people on em. normally around the 100 - 125cc range. they gear them down also.

I rode a 425 magnum around my woods a bunch, i hated it. Really feel all the weight, hard to control riding on trails fast. It was fun riding in and out of a state ditch with the 4 wheel drive. Made it really easy.

A friend if mine bought a new Xplorer 400 and has had a lot of small problems except for one. He went to drain the oil out of it and when he was trying to loosen the drain plug, the engine casting just broke out around the plug. He said he has never seen or heard of such a thing before. I guess the casting had a flaw. Luckily it was still under warrantee and Polaris fixed everything. I know there are lemons out there with all brands, but Polaris seems to always top the list. I personally think its mainly do to their poor engineering and build quality. Just sit on any used Polaris that's a couple of years old. You will probably notice sloppy, loose steering play and loose misaligned plastic body panels.

If I was to ever have to take an ATV somewhere where I had a chance of being seriously stranded, such as deep in the Canadian wilderness and I had a choice of a brand new Polaris or a 10 year old properly maintained Honda......I would take the Honda!

You couldn't get me to buy a Poo-laris for nothing. I worked in a Poo-laris dealer/shop for over a year and about 80% of them were back within a month for some stupid warrantee reason. Casting flaws weren't that uncommon. I even saw a couple that couldn't even hold oil at the case halves.

we have 2 scrambler 400 2X4 , bought them new in 2001, worst problem we've had was a bad battery in 1.
we ride trails and sand dunes, they do great on both. We love the s. oregon coast, Winchester bay has 40 miles of sand!!! and hugh dunes!
the trails we ride are on private property and BLM land, s.e. of Portland, Ore.
Any riders out this way?

most of the rental shops in winchester bay use the scrambler 200 or 250 2X4 w/ stock tires, seems to me if they were such crappy bikes they would spend the extra $$$ and get a "better" bike. these bikes are ridin pretty hard and they run them all day

So many people have siad this and it is so true, RIDE WHAT YOU LIKE! if you dont like it, maybe you shouldnt buy it.I have a polaris and I think it is the best. They have there good qualities and so do others, polaris is more a work hog e.g. farm beater and Yamahas or more racers.
