Our family owns an 86 big red we have had forever. I decided to get a little red in the form of an 82 atc70. Well after a summer of riding the spark quit. Luckily there are tons of parts out there for it and I picked up a CDI conversion I have been hearing so much about from overseas and bam! It runs and starts up so easily. I am so glad I do not have to deal with points, not hard but time consuming and I am pretty sure my coil windings were worn out because it was a real intermittent spark issue while the timing of the points never changed. I still need a good seat cover and some good rear fenders...any one have one they would let go?

The nice thing about the 70 is there is a TON of aftermarket stuff available for them. Here is just a few links that usually get posted on here.

Where do people mount the CDI for the conversion kit...i want it to look semi stock and not rigged up. I was thinking right on the tube where the coil is but I am concerned about heat rising off the engine and cooking it..then I thought to mount it below the seat, between fender and frame but I am worried about debris kicking up from wheels.

It should be fine just over the carb tied to the frame tube. Your rec/reg should be fine there too.

Yep, they are pretty heat resistant, that should be no problem mounting it there. Sounds like a fun project! One of these days im going to get my hands on a 70... Only been looking for three years now... LOL

I installed two of those cdi units. I have a 73 and 74 atc70, I mounted the cdi to the ignition coil bracket. I drilled a hole in the bracket toward the back of the trike and ran a bolt thru the hole in the cdi and attached it to the bracket. Works great.

I’m working on one of my ATC 70's at the moment and I am going to put a CDI unit on it as well. User id bkm on the site mounted his on the frame under the seat and ran the wires up through the frame, he said that worked really well.

Does anyone have a link to a Cdi conversion for sale. I'm guessing they provide a new flywheel with this kit?

Here is one.

All the ATC 70 conversion kits i have seen do not come with a new flywheel. You can just use your old one in most cases if it is in good working condition.

Use the Search function as there are a few threads on this...

Here is one - http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/164138-ATC-70-CDI-conversion?highlight=atc+70+cdi
