Well as posted in this thread http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/164142-ATC-185s I picked up a couple new to me trikes. One complete one parts

And here's the parts one

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Dave_D/Mobile%20Uploads/3B3FEB7C-A6F0-4028-90C6-A46D4DE91BEC.jpg

I posted a couple kinda questions on the last thread. But I know now its for sure not a neutral light problem now.
But I currently don't have spark and don't know where to start. Could it be the coil from being left turned on to long ?
We swear we saw a spark today. But it never returned or couldn't get it to return.
Could it be the plug or the boot ?

Any input is appreciated

Thanks
Dave

Dave

Yes,yes, yes, and yes. Its time to test each component. Do you have a manual with the component specs?

Dave_D
01-15-2014, 04:18 PM
I've downloaded the manual haven't looked through it yet though.
I'm at work now but does it specify how to test each component ?
I'll probably pick up a plug after work. Have a feeling it's not the problem but it's 4 bucks locally and I'd probably end up putting a new one in it anyways
Thanks for your reply

Some folks replace entire wire harnesses (me included) only to admit the old one was probably ok but just going through EVERY connection, they magically work.
and yes,
My all time favorite intermittent spark fix is:
nip the last tiny bit off the plug wire so the spark plug cap has new copper to bite into.
Had that be a problem on at least 10 machines.
and of course, ohm all the other stuff too
Manual gives the service limits for all components.
I like an old analog meter for those tests.
Digitals jump around too much for me.

try search key for
"intermittent spark"
I usually read ALL the posts, even if it isn't the machine I'm working on.
also, pull off the cover that says "CDI".
They get superfine red rustdust for some reason and could mess up that sensor, trigger coil or whatever it's called in there to tell it when to spark.

Dave_D
01-15-2014, 05:21 PM
I went over it already checking connections and did snip off the end of the plug wire
I'll start looking into the manual avd testing everything next

I have tryed the CDI and sensor thing under CDI cover on the engine. Off of parts trike still nothing it's missing the coil so dident try that. Still hoping it's something simple
Wonder if it's worth trying the coil off my ytm if it's even possible ?

Thanks

The coil tests are easy, and yes they are outlined in the manual. Let us know!

I can't believe this
Put a new plug in it and......
It fired up first pull

I was very surprised no matter what I did I couldn't get it to make a spark before screw driver in the boot holding the shaft like 1/16th off the block
Held the plug in my hand didn't feel a thing.

But today I was riding it up and down the road. So happy lol

Thanks

Believe it Dave, plugs are often overlooked and four strokes foul too! I've bought brand new plugs that wouldn't fire as well.

I have a question now.
The shifter to go from high low reverse is extremely stiff. any reason, maybe from sitting, adjustable in anyway ?
The one on my parts machine is completely effortless to go between the 3 positions

Any input is appreciated

Thanks
Dave

Just sticking from sitting i'm sure. My 200ES was the same way when i got it, i soaked around the back side of the lever with some PB Blaster then down around the shaft of the shifter, the part you pull up on to change positions. You can also remove the nut that it slides through and squirt some lube around in there as well. With some use it will loosen up. The other problem i generally have is it won't always shift unless its running and in first gear, sitting still just idling in first, then it will shift back and forth with ease.

Well the front suspension is shot on this thing lift the rack and the tire drops
Easy to fix worth fixing ?
Opinions

Also has a little noise coming from engine I'm guessing cam chain adjustment but really could be anything

The front ends are a bad design . Mine was not to bad , I took it apart cleaned it and replaced just the plastic slide bushings . (cheap ) works good enough . Some are worn so bad they have slop back and forth .

Cam chain adjustment fixed my engine noise .

Is it a stupid idea or a big no no ?

How bad are they ? If they are just stiff , no slop I would clean them out , replace the bushings and call it good .

Not stiff at all tire is enough weight to make it load avd unload. Looks like one side bottoms out before the other avd front tire sits croked on its weight

Your lucky to bring home not one but two BR's shaft drive!
Sounds like you just need new fork oil seals.
Here is the D-Ray vid on the cam chain adjustment (all his vids are great), you will need a 3x.5mm bolt.

If your talking oil leak on the motor the most likely cause is the o-ring on the dowel pin that is the oil passage up to the head. You will need a full compliment of gaskets to tear it down and replace it though, removing the head, etc.

Thats the same guy i get my gasket sets from most of the time, good seller, fast shipping. Never had an issue with him. I bought a couple 200ES sets and a 125M set from him last summer. Always nice to have them on hand for maintenance or repair.

The 200ES is like a coilover shock on your car, the problem is the little shocks they used are pretty poor really and a lot of people complain about these front ends being useless... LOL

I have been searching a while now for an off the shelf shock that will replace it or can be modified to replace the stock one. Mine has good springs and shocks but they are getting a bit weak, not weak enough that the front end drops under weight yet but i can definitely push it down and watch it slowly rebound like a car with bad shocks.

I saw some pictures a while back where a guy slaved some shocks onto the forks, by that i mean he left the stock shock and spring inside but put a shock on the outside with mounting points added to the forks and the tubes. Seems like it worked well but i lost track of the guy that did it and the pictures i had in an email over the years. I always thought about trying that with mine. Maybe leave the shock and spring inside as the shock is needed to keep it all aligned, but disable the stock shock by drilling a hole in it to let out any pressure remaining? Then the added external shock and the internal spring does the work. I don't know still a work in progress in my mind. Since the original style ones aren't made any more we don't have much for options.

They are about the size of some hood support shocks, though they don't have the correct mounting on either end, could be made to work with a little fabrication though.

Dave.

Make sure you know what you have. Talk to tiger guys that aren't looking to buy anything and ask values. As much as I love this site, there are people here that will gladly take the parts for less than they are worth with no intention of letting you know what you have.

Dave_D
02-11-2014, 06:21 AM
It will pull up. But to go forward and back between gears takes all my strength.
We're at father in laws to save a down payment. The goal is to buy a house with a shop/garage so we have space to store and work on the toys.
Right now the trikes are somewhat scattered about under tarps so there a bit of a pain to get to

Big red fired on first pull yesterday after sitting for quite some time
Need to see if this battery will take a charge or just replace it.

Ok, it shouldnt take that much force, one question though. Are you trying to shift the sub trans with the main shifter in neutral? The best way i have found on the 200ES is with it running and in first gear, not moving just idling, then the sub trans meshes back and forth like butter.

Dave_D

Well this thing has needed a air filter since I got it. Has one in it but I'm not happy enough with its condition
I found this one on eBay http://www.ebay.ca/itm/200775466068

But from what I've read this should be the same

Don't use that filter... Tried it myself, didn't fit. What you need is the foam one that goes on the air filter frame that sits in the airbox.

The UNI filter is the best in my opinion, perfect fit, has the hole in the end for the bracket to screw in. The Moose one is ok though and a little cheaper, but its hit or miss on the hole though you can carefully make it yourself.

The uni filters usually recommend 80w gear lube but i find that makes them too gooey in cold weather so to speak. I usually just soak in some good 5w-30 and squeeze out the excess and its good to go. When it comes time to clean it a bucket of hot water with some dawn dish soap and wringing it out like a sponge til clean gets the job done for me, then soak in oil and squeeze out again before installing. After letting it air dry a few hours of course.

Dave_D
03-01-2014, 01:36 AM
The foam doesn't come apart from the rest on this. Won't be able to wring it out. But think ill oil it with a -30w of some sort.

I love ordering parts for my trikes (slowly accumulating parts for this and a ytm)
Can't wait till I have more space to work on them.
This trikes easy vs the ytm. Ytm needs a total tear down

But for this trike I just ordered

So me and the wife had Friday off sent our daughter to daycare so we could just hang out. Very rare to get a day off just us.

Well she wanted to try the trike :) at first in the back yard but really not much space so I suggested the gravel pit.
I was surprised she agreed so I loaded the trike and we were on our way.

Rode it at first with me on the back. But didn't want her used to riding with a passenger so I hopped off after she got the throttle control figured out. She never took it out of first but still had a blast (she's never been on a quad trike dirt bike ect till this)

Took this baby out to ride today with the family
Ran for about 5 min then quit I'm 90% sure it's the plug
Seems quick to foul a plug that fast. Any ideas ?

Pics to come there was a few machines out today (Mother's Day) mine was only 3 wheeler though

I put 200m front end on mine and welded the lugs on for 200es light and a rack I made also added some bigger lugs for the 250es front mudguard to fit

Sounds silly but on the 200e models always check the fuses out inside the battery box area.

I went over it already checking connections and did snip off the end of the plug wire
I'll start looking into the manual avd testing everything next

Still hoping it's something simple

Gotta love electrical gremlins, glad the new spark plug did the trick

I forgot to mention before. The engine noise it has has been tracked down.
I pulled the pull start off and fired it up. No noise

Looks like the dog in the pull start is bouncing off the catch
Not sure if proper terms. But I'm sure you'll all get it.
