So about 2 months ago my next door neighbor came over to talk to me. He said that his father-in-law gave him a non-running 2001 Honda Rancher. So, he asked if we could go pick it up, since I have a Jeep and trailer. I obliged and we picked it up that day. My neighbor didn't know how to fix it but we figured it needed a new carb for sure and a new plug and air filter. My father-in-law is a mechanic by trade so he said he would fix it if my neighbor ordered the parts and just bill him for his time. Once the parts came in it took my father-in-law 4 days, working a few hours here and there, to completely tear the quad apart and put it back together, clean and in perfect working order. I went to go pick it up and it was a blast to drive around. My father-in-law only charged my neighbor $50 for everything, so my neighbor was thrilled about that. I was sheltered growing up in the fact that my parents wouldn't even let me have a go kart let alone a quad or dirt bike.
I took the Rancher to my neighbor who is now in love with it and he suggested that I pick one up as well. I agreed and said I would look around. Here in Georgia Ranchers are little out of my price range so I started looking for Recons. I chose to stick with Honda's for their reliability and low cost of ownership. After almost getting a Recon, the guy sold it the day I was going to look at it, I found a 1984 ATC 200 ES Big Red. It is in awesome shape. New tires, carb works great, the electric starter works great as does the pull start, the inside of the gas tank is 100% rust free and all low gears, high gears and reverse work as they should. It has both racks even though the front one was taken off and a little dirty, new paint and both front and rear lights work.
To me, the good outweigh the bad. It has an aftermarket front headlight, the front brake lever has been removed, although the front drum is still there, and there is a 2 inch crack in the rear of the seat. Everything else is there and in working order. It is 1:30 in the morning and I will not be able to capture some great pics, so I am posting this now and will post some pics either later today or Sunday for your viewing pleasure. I look forward to getting to know you and share experiences as I start my atv adventure.
Sorry, I accidentally posted this in the wrong section, so I moved the thread.
