instead of framing up a wall with a regular door, I went a different route!! Figured it would be way easier to get things in and out this way( and it is) but mostly I just thought it would be cool, and I had to figure out something to do with the damn doors I pulled out of the dumpster at work lol!! after I priced all the hardware for a sliding barn door, being the cheapo I am, I decided I could Build my own!
The doors are solid core comercial wood doors atleast 100lbs a piece. all the steel came from some scrapped electrical switch gear, sweeps on bottom are scrap coldlock pieces from a computer raised floor, all the sweet grade 8 hardware came from work. I did by some bearings for the home made roller brackets for the custom unistrut track at a cost of 30.00, 2 hose clamps for the guide castor, long lag bolts to mount the track and consumables for the project. Door is 9 foot long, slides about 7 feet. slides pretty sweet, my 6 year old has no problem moving it. Now I can keep the damn cat out of my side of the basement!! Was much more of a project than I anticipated, but I had alot of fun building it, It is definately a one off door. thanks for looking!
All the steel is powdercoated gray, which makes it a pain to weld, as it has to be all ground off which is not easy, and anything on the backside burns off so its a bit nasty. But I have tons of raw materials from the equipment it came from, from strut to sheet metal to big beefy c channel to flatstock. It was all going in the dumpster so I stocked up!! I have been using the stuff for awhile now for alot of projects!! It was a full on work out turning in the 8- 6 x 1/2" lags into the microlam for the track!! I used the proper size drill bit acording to info I found!! I am not a small dude, and that was work!! A little tricky getting the door on the track by myself lol, especially being the four bearing rollers I made are not held in place until they are in the track but I managed!
