Attached is a picture of my atc 70 air box. Notice the gap between the boot and the air box. Would this cause the machine to run like crap? It only runs decent with the choke turned on. I fooled with the two adjustment screws on the carb that handles idling and air mixture. This is a recent rebuild top end with new points.

Yes, that will cause it to suck more air than needed. You need to get the boot seated in the air box properly.

Thank you. Are there known fitment issues with that boot and the air box? I had heard when it gets warmer outside it will expand? Any truth to that? Any ideas on how I could fix this?

Don't overthink it. Just pull the boot and the airbox off and work the boot back into the airbox. Then put the airbox/boot combo back on to the machine.

LOL. Thanks again. I always think it is going to be difficult!

I have more fun in the snow on my 70 than I do the big red. 70 has been down for 2 months for rebuild.

In my infinite wisdom prying around on that boot I ripped right through it with a flathead screwdriver.

Take into consecration on what type of terrain you ride in sand go with the k&n and a filter skin. In it is loam or dirt do with the foam filter. Sand will pass through a foam filter easier then the cotton filter. And vise versa.
