Why do you want to check timing? Is it running now?

Read up on the removal and replacement of the CAM. It will tell you how to check the timing of the motor. The manual DL is free.

CAM TIMING

Remove both plugs on lt cover.

Remove advance unit.

Put eng in tdc.

Look at timing mark in gear and engine. They should line up. See page 6-19 in link below.

INGNITION TIMING

Make sure the advancer on cam moves freely and returns to the stop and still has some spring tension on it.
Reinstall cam cover.

Locate the “F” mark on flywheel.

Clean with cleaner and q tip.

Install a line using white out so it is easy to see.

Connect timing , start bike and check. The “F” should be in the window.

TDC is top dead center, where the piston is at the top of the compression stroke.
If you dont have a timing light then what you are trying to do is just about impossible. Buy one, or find a buddy with one and go from there.
THe manual can answer these questions very easily without the need for 3+ other threads that could be consolidated into one.

Since we are getting specific about TDC now, you need to know that there are 2 TDC's on a four stroke engine.

An easy way to know what stroke you are on is to watch the intake rocker go down and come back up. Continue to rotate the engine until the "t" is in the window, then check cam timing.

+1 Dohc.

Another way to find TDCC is to simply remove the spark plug, stick an expendable finger over the hole and have someone slowly kick the bike over or rotate the crank counter clockwise when viewing from the left side, via the crank bolt until you feel air being forced OUT of the cylinder. Once this is felt, remove finger and simply continue to rotate the crank until you see the T mark in the hole.
