I have other problems that I would like help with but first I wanted to ask how I can figure out what year this thing is.. I have looked all over the frame. It just says 3x3-001728 on both the frame and the motor. But from what I have looked up this is not the VIN. Somebody please help..

Should be on the neck of the bike,, sometimes repainted over makes it hard to see, try a wire brush

You mean the neck where the fork is? That is where I found the 3x3 number but no other number. I have scraped all around there with my knife with no such luck.. Thank you for responding btw. I have other questions about it. Shoud I start a new thread so people know what its about??

I'm not familiar with the YT125, but in addition to the VIN on the neck, there should be a VIN on the engine.
Usually on a flat spot at the base of the cylinder, or on top of the bottom end... somewhere on the "primary" engine case.

You can see if the neck numbers match the Engine VIN, the old Yamahas had short VINs 9 digits I think.

Edit: according to this:

A 3x3 VIN is a YT125G, Yamaha designated each model year with a new letter afterwards, YT125G is a 1980.

Oh wow. I was told it was an 85 from the previous owner. Here is the picture from the number on the motor. 188904

That's definitely the VIN. Chart could be wrong... you can call Yamaha customer service and read them the VIN, they will give you a model/year.

I had found a 9 digit VIN lookup at one point... but it does not seem to work anymore.
