Our dear President has announced sanctions against certain "Individuals and entities operating in the arms sector in Russia". Now speculation as to whether this means that the US will block or ban the importation of Russian/combloc surplus and new manufacture ammo is about 50-50, with some people saying that's not what these sanctions mean and others saying that sooner more than later soviet ammo will be blocked from import.

My experience today has shown me that people are gettin a little freaky about it. Both calibers appear to be flying off of the shelves at online suppliers. If your stash of these calibers is getting low, I would advise picking up some before the panic sets in more than it has.

Better safe than sorry. ;)

ETA: That means brands like Wolf, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, WPA (wolf Performance Ammunition), Ammo manufactured by/in Barnaul, TulAmmo, Golden Tiger (If that's still around)

Oh sure I was just thinking about buying an AK47. Maybe I'll have to get an AR instead.

Yea, it's dirty stuff, but it's cheap compared to some of the domestic stuff. It works fine for punchin paper, cans and Tannerite. I need to get set up for reloading those 2 calibers.

A fair amount of .223 around and the price is coming down a bit. Get an AK in .223 ;)

Have fun trying to reload those Berdan primed AK rounds! hammer

Brass cases for boxer primers are readily available, and berdan primers are also available to replace the originals. I don't do any reloading, but my old man has been doing it for around 50 years and has all the equipment. It's one of those things I need to get him to teach me before he's gone.

It's a little bit of a pain in the arse, but it can be done. Converting to boxer primers:

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?143855-Converting-Berdan-primer-pockets-to-Boxer

I've bought some 7.62x54r brass in the past and had him reload it for me, and then I kind of let it fall by the wayside because I got busy. Might have to start buying that and x39 again too.

Doesn't Remington make and sell those sizes here? Good thing I've got a few thousand boxes for the AK and SKS.

A few thousand BOXES or a few thousand ROUNDS?

yea Remmy and Winny both do. So do a couple of others, but.....

At Sportsmans Guide Remington 7.62x39 123 gr sells for about 150.00 for 200 rds,Winchester is about 175.00 for 200rds

Wolf 7.62x39 123gr sells for about 125.00 for 500 rds

For just general plinking I'll take the cheap stuff. If I was reloading then I'd opt for the Remmy or Winny since I could reload the brass.

I thought of it after, might only affect the US, Not Canada, that may be the case. if so, come to Canada to hunt and pick up the ammo here if possible!

Are you talking TulAmmo 7.62x39? Is it as dirty/sooty as Wolf?

It's a win-win for our "fearless leader"...another restriction on ammo and another way to piss Putin off. Does anyone else feel that we're overstepping our boundaries a little bit here? I mean 95% of the Ukraine voted to be annexed...that's about as democratic as anything I know of. Am I missing something here?

And just to be safe I picked up 2 spam cans of Mosin for $140 and 678 rounds of Soviet AK with a free ammo can for $199. Maybe I'm paranoid, but it's always nice to have a little surplus laying around.

Also, make sure you clean your barrels after shooting the surplus ammo...the potassium salts can corrode your bore. After shooting, you can spray windex or boiling water to neutralize the salts until you get your piece to the cleaning table.

It is highly unlikely that these calibers will be harder to find because of any sanctions on Russia by our government. Especially since most American ammunition producers make these calibers.

Scootertrash
03-22-2014, 07:45 AM
We covered that already. Domestic manufactured is about twice the cost of the Eastern Bloc import ammo;

At Sportsmans Guide Remington 7.62x39 123 gr sells for about 150.00 for 200 rds,Winchester is about 175.00 for 200rds

Wolf 7.62x39 123gr sells for about 125.00 for 500 rds

There aren't any sanctions on imports yet . Right now the problem is RUMORS of sanctions. When I posted this, there was a run on these calibers, but it seems to have slowed for the time being. A lot of the online surplus retailers sold out of their supplies of 7.62x54r in a day when the rumors started.

I posted this as a heads up for members here because after the last attempt at nonsensical gun laws ammo flew off the shelves and common calibers like .22, 9mm, 45, etc. were hard to get and the price went up. .22lr is still hard to come by unless you want to pay 50-60 dollars a brick on Gunbroker and at gunshows, which is roughly twice the price. Some areas aren't as bad as others, but Cabelas sells out of .22lr in a matter of hours when it does get it.

Scooter , good heads up on the post , and I think your point was that paranoid response is again going to drive the sales of the Russian calibers if not all ammo , along with the chance of a boycott . I stocked up when no one was looking , so I'm good .
Its still out there , buy some FMJ to get you bye , or if the price is right get what you can .

I bought a USGI M1 Carbine a few years back . When I got it , there was no ammo to be found . 6 months before it showed up at $1.50 a round . I waited , waited ,,,,, it came down to $.50 per , I bought 1500 rounds .

As a gun owner , get when the getting is good .

Buy cheap, stack it deep ;)

I've got 880 rounds of Russian surplus 54r on the way to add to my stash. I've had some MAJOR car repairs in the last few weeks that I had to pay someone to fix since I don't have the skills for transmission work. Once I recoup from that I'll add to my stash of 7.62x39.

M1 carbines are fun guns to shoot.

Thanks! Probably won't make it over there, too busy. I'm on Cabelas email list for alerts when they get some in. Nice thing is I can order it and then pick it up in store and not have to pay shipping. I have a good stash right now. Wish my Old Man hadn't retired from Federal Cartridge several years ago. :(

what a lot of people don't understand about American made ammo in the 7.62x39 caliber is that they have soft primers. I have 3 full auto rifles and while its fun to go out and shoot a full auto every now and then, having your ak blow through half of a 75 round drum full auto because of the soft primer is not only irritating its dangerous. just be careful if you use American made ammo I have had this problem in my sks (Chinese) and my sks (Yugo) my aks have not had this problem as of yet and the ammo has been Winchester and Remington. on a side note in my cz pistol the wolf ammo has a better grouping than the American made stuff (its still a cz and you have a better chance at hitting something with the ejected shell casings) but that is 7.62x25 tokarev

Never heard of that in a AK , but can be common in the SKS because of the design of the firing pin . The pin is free floating in the bolt , if it becomes stuck in the forward position ,,, full auto until it empties . Soft primers are a bad thing for SKS for sure .
