I recently bought a 1983 250r for 300 dollars the biggest issue with it is I need to replace the shift shaft I've got a new one on the way but how technical of a project is this should I pay a shop or attempt this myself? I do have some mechanical skill and a set of basic hand tools. Oh and the motor is already out of the trike.

You will need to pull the left sidecover where the shift shaft comes out. Make sure you have it in neutral when you remove and install the new one. You shouldnt have to remove the clutch .And keep track of your thrush washers and shift return spring.

It shouldn't be too hard. I just did a 250 engine rebuild myself and had no problems with the tranny section.
