Hoping to get a quick answer on this..

As the title suggests, I am wanting to know if the CDI off an '85 250ES will work on an '85 250R?

I assume they are interchangeable, however, I know the 250R CDI for '85 is specific to that year.

Just hoping to hear from someone who knows more than me :D

Why would you assume they are interchangeable? Because both are 1985 and 250 cc? But to answer your question, NO.

If you have the cdi literally look at it and compare if its the same WAM BAM THANK U MAM and she runs! If they look the same doesnt mean they are innerchangable. The 84 250r cdi looks similar to the 85 cdi and even plugs in but doesnt work.

Not only do I agree with briano and atc300r, but I'll take it a step further and let you know that the 85 250r CDI is unique to itself compared to every later year liquid cooled 250r. Being that is the case, functional used '85 CDI's are tougher to find....

You can however swap an '86 ATC250r wiring harness in and that will make it so you can use the more common '86 CDI and POSSIBLY 87-89. I am not sure if 87-89 CDI's are compatible with 86 systems, so more research on that is needed.

And while we are talking about CDI's I will answer a question that is bound to come up: AVOID AFTERMARKET CDI'S LIKE THE PLAGUE! Not one person I have ever known has had anything but problems with aftermarket CDI's, including myself. Use OEM only.
