Picked up 250r. Bottom end seemed ok transmission shifted through all the gears clutch felt good. But it didnt hav top end so could not here it run. It came with tri z head lights original gold rims and some aftermarket aluminum ones as well so 2 sets of rims and tires got it for $400. but il need to buy exhuast, carb, and jug and piston. Any suggestions for a carb, exhuast, and top end rebuild kit. I know ebay but don't know much about how the quality is. I'm not looking for a screamer just getting running basically. Il post so pics shortly

Needs lot of work. Tri z head lights gold rims and aluminum ones forks looks like needs to be flipped around. But that's least of my worries. Gonna start ordering parts.

Yep thats a project, those rear rims, tires and hubs are off like a 400 ex or the like, good swap. Looks like the engine has been apart for a while. there are a # of 2nd gen R builds going on right now. Go through the build threads and get some info and ideas. They are great trikes. I am redoing an 84 right now. Find out what you need for engine parts and what not and make a list of what you need. Where are you located?

Need:

Carb, top end rebuild kit, jug, header, Reeds, intake manifold, air box and hoses, skid plate, Throttle cable, tail light, grab bar.

If I go to a 72mm Bore would I run into heat problems? I found a jug 71.8 mm bore.

hello

the carb size depends on the cyl porting, pipe, engine size and riding preference but a 36 mm is a good all around size for a performance bike or around a 32 for a cruiser.

the best deal on a carb is an old school mikunui VM style. they are around 75.00 new. even if you are marty hart or jimmy white you do not "need" a $200.00 Octo Port Dragon Slayer XXX 2000 made of Prefabulated Amulite because it ain't gonna make you any faster. Spend the money you saved on the beverage of your choice.

vm 36 ebay $99.00.

also check mossbarger and boysen for reeds and intake boots or buy stock type reeds.

If I go to a 72mm Bore would I run into heat problems? I found a jug 71.8 mm bore.Yes, do it right the first time and buy one that is a decent 71 mm max. this way you can bore it when you get it and still bore it a few more times. if you use wossner, you might need to re-angle the squish band in your head.

you can buy orig cast pistons in the last link which are good. wiseco and wossner also sell them. also see pro x pistons and sleeves in the la sleeve link below.

you can also buy a trashed cylinder and buy a sleeve for 125.00 and get it installed for around 165.00.

I ran one for years at 72 mill and didnt have any trouble.A member on here 1upfront has a stock cylinder bored to 74 mill and he hasnt had any heat issues.

Pics of Rusty Gas tank before and after Apple Cider Vinegar soak for a Day then Power Washed then Repeated a second Time. Worked really good. But if u hav the original petcock on there might take it off and cap if off with a nut , bc it ate my oem petcock which was prolly trash anyway.

Pics of Piston getting oiled up and jug installed, Me checking Spark Plug Gap, Getting Torque Wrench ready, and new 32mm Mikuni Round Slide Carb
Petcock was a new one aftermarket off ebay. Sent me wrong size, then sent me right size but the outlet was one the wrong side so I hav a backwards petcock from now on as I didnt want my gas line to hav to loop around if it was facing normal.
And there's some copper gasket spray I sprayed all the gaskets couple times and let them tack up.

I had no spark, had checked Ohms of stator and Ignition Coil decided to check stator out anyways, turned out someone had been in there before and couldn't get flywheel back on I guess so they beat the living hell out of it the threads for which a flywheel puller would go in were smashed square or flat so I couldn't remove with a traditional 2 stroke flywell puller so it took some patience and a steering wheel puller. Stator looked ok but went a head and replaced flywheel and made sure stator was lined up corectly with mark on engine case.Turned out the Woodruff key was a little bigger than OEM, my dad said oh just go to autozone there all universal. well that's what I think the last guy who had this did and its different size. same width diff height. I went to Honda and got OEM woodruff key for 1984 Honda 250r atc. and u can see the difference in the sizes. flywheel had no wobble and went right on with OEM woodruff key. and long story short bought oem Ignition coil and bypassed ON/OFF switch and Whala I have Spark. I should Have know that bc I remember when I picked it up the ON/OFf Key wasn't hooked up and the CDI wires wernt all connected.

Finished Product, Nervous as Hell about to try and start the trike first time, and first time trike has ran since 2000, the previous owner told me and first time I have ever rebuilt a top end and ever messed with a 2 stroke. Never Even drove a 2 stroke. 4 months and messing with ordering all kinds of parts and dealing with no spark and buying 3 intake boots bc I didn't do my homework. The 27mm boot I boiled I barley got around 32mm carb and it ripped a little but not enough to cause air leak but win I hav to take it off to change main jets its gonna rip more so I bought 84-83 boot which I believe is 30mm and should slide right on 32mm carb. And we'll I picked up some gas mixed 20-1 ratio for break in and I herd if u blow in carb vent hose it can help starting so I did that gave some slow kicks to help lube it up a little found compression stroke and holy hell gave it a good kick and fired right up. I have a video tried to post of it running but wouldn't let me post from my phone might try and post from my pc tomorrow. But I was happy as hell to here this mean sum trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro run. It was smoking a little which was to be expected having it rich and being a 2 stroke. I did about 4 heat cycles letting it idle giving it a couple blips of the throttle ocationally for about 5 mins and letting it cool down completely between heat cycles. Then took it for a spin nice and easy for about 5 mins. I've done that about 4 times verraing my speed and not going over half throttle and I've let it cool down completely between the rides. I've prolly gone through almost two gallons of gas from what I read it said about 5 gallons of gas gone through before wiseco piston broke n. idk I'm not gonna take any chances so just gonna keep it nice n easy for a while. I notice it seems rich during idle and driving it I get at driving it bc the main jet would come n to play but at idle pilot jet of 35 seemed pretty normal from what I saw on airfoolers.com. Now I know I wanted it rich for break n but after that I'm wondering if I should change pilot jet to a 32.5 or 30. Right now its got a 35. In hopes of leaning it out a little. I got air screw turned out 4 -5 turns which from what I read should only hav to be 1 to 2 turns out. I could bring needle clip up a little to lean it out but from what I read that doesn't really take affect till 1/4th throttle. I appreciate all the help and feed back I hav got from other post and everybody along the way.

Forgot to post this earlier, Me deciding to install new Boysen Power Reeds before and after u can diffinatley see the gap n the old reeds compared to the new.
And Boiling 27mm intake boot in hopes to fit 32mm Carb which I don't recommend 5mm little too much to make it stretch
And Me switching out 200 Main jet that it came with to a 160 In hopes to make sure its still rich for wiseco Break in but not 200 bc that would be way too rich and not in the general ball park I need. and prolly end up gradually carefully leaning out to somewhere between 145 150 or 155 and messing with needle clip

Glad to hear that it runs and starts so easily! After break in, you'll have fun getting used to riding your first two stroke. By the way, I hope you like to spin tires. They are fun for that.

I Recently picked up an 84 Honda atc 250r, for about $800. Great condition and Super Fast. Love these things. In the Netherlands where I live, these things are a rare item. Nobody heared of 3 wheelers here.
