View Full Version : Who has the goods on a 350X Big bore?

Who still makes big bores for these machines? I have a 350X cylinder with a XR500 sleeve and a 90mm XR500 Wiseco piston but it's too tall even with a 3mm spacer, looks like I need to either take some off the top OR find a 90mm purpose built piston for the 350X. I also have a second cylinder I'd like to install a big bore in as a spare / something different / maybe use in something else?... I have a STD bore cylinder and Wiseco piston already, so I'd be looking at something in the 86mm range I guess, complete kit. I don't really want to go larger than the 90mm because it would have to be in the 95mm+ range and there isn't much meat left on that crank case as it is bored for the standard XR500 sleeve.

So what I need to find is a gasket set for my 90mm setup and a shorter piston, and a complete 86mm ish kit. Gasket, sleeve, piston, the works.

I've already contacted Wiseco, JP and I think CP and all they had to offer was custom kit. I don't want to have to buy 4 or 6 pistons if I don't have to....

Any advice?

PS Before you get too excited about monster 350X motors, this is actually for a TRX350 motor; sorry to disappoint lol.

about that. Theres talk of old man Wiliker doing another run of his spooky 400X kits, but you can only find him over at the old mill!

Really thought there may be a public run of the 400 kits since i was looking at one in the next couple months. I have no control over how many they do or when it happens, but its out there for the summer

Eric's my brother, him and Sprock made the 400X kits originally. He was planning on doing a run this summer for myself and a few others. I don't know how many he plans to do but the more that jump in the less it costs for everyone. Atleast that's how i comprehend it.

Well I'd be down for a kit for sure if he's willing to fit me in.

Hello mac102004;

If you are in a hurry you might send shortline10 a pm or email/call my good friend Mickey Dunlap at http://www.fourstroketech.net/. They may be able to help you.

If you want to do some footwork you can easily get a big bore for anything. Back in 76 our shop made a 500 out of a 350 xl for the Desert racer we sponserd. It would roast a street tire on the asphalt, lol.

SLEEVES

Contact one of the many sleeve mfg’s and get a custom sleeve made. LA Sleeve has been around for a zillion years and I have gotten many sleeves from them. They can also probably install it if they feel like it. The problem with them is that they have gotten a bit prissy with some of their prices for some reason.

Melling is a great company and their retail stuff is reasonable so I’d try them also. I will tell you that a custom sleeve for a 427 Ford cost me around 60.00. Perhaps you should say it’s for instead of a motorcycle if anyone asks.

They and a few others can be found on the link below.

PISTONS

Same deal, call or email and get prices. Below are a few custom and production piston mfg’s. If you do not know your piston specs, simply send them a stock piston and tell them how big around you want it, lol. They will do the measuring for you.

JE – High end pistons.

Off the shelf pistons.

RACE TEC – Small company, never used them but saw a video on them. I’d use them.

See several others in the link below. Arias, Wiseco, United Pistons [Keith Black, Egge Machine are all good.

Here’s some others.

LABOR - If you need the sleeve installed try, motorcycle cylinder boring shop, regular machine shop or high school machine, motorcycle or auto shop. Some teachers take projects like this if their students are not already working on restoring the teachers car etc.. Give them a few bucks and they put the money towards supplies etc..

TELEPHONE

If you want results, use it. Do NOT email. Most of these companies have toll free numbers which means you can call them for FREE. You might have to wait 10 minutes to talk to someone. Who cares, you will have an instant answer. Even if it is NOT free, who cares. The parts will cost WAY more than your phone bill I assure you. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing013.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

I did a J&E 472 a few years back. Straight forward with them. But that bullet resides in a ATC :) :) My brain can't recall what gaskets I used.. FUN bikes! I am very curious though. Why a TRX 350?? They didn't have enough chassis for the 350!! I'm sure it's a beast. But .....to each their own lol :)

TRX 350,86-89. 300's don't share any of these parts. The Fourtrax is the same top end as the 86 ATC. I was just curious as they aren't the best handling buggy,to say the least! They have a swingarm,,,in the FRONT!!

No he has a trx350 head on the bottom end of a trx300 and he has put a lot of work into it I think he had to get the cases bored and the flywheel side of the crank machined to fit and a heap of other stuff it's best to ask him for the details....

TC Racing might be able to help you out.I know Tom Carlson has helped me and others.I just purchased a new 39mm FCR carb from Sparks Performance. It is set up for a 400EX.The air box connector can be used with the larger 400ex air filter.Just installed it.So I need to build a air box yet.So far the carb performs a lot better than the used ones I tried.Even after completely rebuilding them.It isn't a cheap carb though $500.

The FCR Carbs are where its at! I plan to run one on my 400 kitted 350x after the build. I have heard theres no point in running one on a stock displacement 350x motor though, not sure if thats right but theoretically it seems right.

Actually. I've heard from a really good source.. Probably around 5 hp on a Big Red :) :) :) :) :) Well worth the mods that will be necessary :) I plan to make this 1st hand knowledge someday lol.

jake, I'm everywhere man, been cruising ATV forums for over a decade so I get around quite a bit LOL. No trikes anymore though, I've had a couple 200 Big Reds years ago, but that was years ago. I'd love to find a 350X but they are so rare up here. There is one for sale locally and the guy wants $4000 for it. I just can't justify spending that kind of cash on one when I can go buy a 450 4x4 Foreman 10-15 years newer for the same money or less. The last 450 I had I sold for like $2k.

And yes it's for the monster 300, which is causing me many headaches LOL. Tempting to just throw that STD cylinder on there and run it, but what fun is that?

I did have a 350 for a long time, my old man bought it new in 1987, miss it....but I could get another one for a song if I wanted it. Hence having multiple cylinders ready to go whenever I want. Handling isn't a big concern, the 300 wont handle so good either lifted and rolling on 30" tires haha these are mud machines.

The 300 motor is a hybrid. 350 crank fits right into the 300 cases, the flywheel side of the crank had to be machined to fit the 300's flywheel, but other then that it's drop in. The entire 350 top end drops right on, but since the 350 motor spins opposite of the 300 I had to get a custom reverse grind 350 cam. Of course the exhaust also has to be custom made since the 300 only has one exhaust port. Hope that explains my setup ok. lol

Yeah same in oz the cheapest 350x I can find is $3700

your right then it would just be like every other 300 mudder around!!

So I've browse a bit on LA Sleeve's site and found that they offer a sleeve and gasket set for the 350X made to fit a 89-92mm piston. Unfortunately it seems the site wont process international orders so I have to work on that. I don't really need a sleeve but I might just pick one up anyway. Would have been nice to know they made one for it before I bought and installed the XR500 sleeve.

Like I said before I contacted JE, Wiseco and CP Pistons back in the beginning of the year and they couldn't help me unless I wanted to drop $600-1000 on a custom piston order (4+ pistons I think?). Well, I don't want to buy 4 pistons all the same bore. For $800 I'd sooner buy a cheap mill and shave off 3mm off that XR500 piston that wont cooperate with my engines head. Whoever said they work with just a 3mm spacer is full of bologna.

I guess really only need a head gasket, I modified some stock 350 base gaskets to fit the larger sleeve. But if I was to order some head gasket's I'd order some proper base gaskets too. I'd definately go with Cometic....I already knew I could custom order those no problem but i thought there might of been an easier way like that set LA Sleeve has.

Ahhhh what else? Still haven't contacted Eric, thought maybe I'd see him post in the thread???

I was buying sleeves from them in the early 70's.

I have a 452.Head is ported,polished,cam,exhaust,etc.I bought a new stock fcr 39mm from a dealer.So it wasn't for a specific machine,not even sure of the jet sizes.I got lucky,works awesome.Unfortuneatly,it's a twist throttle.

Has there been any more discussion of offering some kits this summer? I have a good cylinder.....
