Difference between 85 and 87 250es Starter Gear Cover

Hi from Henderson, Mn! Never posted before....so here goes. Working through my 85 250es. I'm wondering if the 87 starter gear cover will fit a 85 model on the 250es. I know the 85 and 86 have a different case and cover but is the whole aluminum gear housing/cover interchangeable on the block. The plastic cover is oval on the 85 and 86's, and tear drop shape on the 87 and 88 models. I have access to a 87 one so I need to know before I take the plunge.

Nope..different all around.

Different cover, starter drive gears, and even engine side cover.

Thanks daugspcs, I realize all that is different, but will the 87 engine cover/ignition cover with internal gears fit the 85 engine block?
