Came across an 86 250sx for pretty cheap, however the gentleman that has it says the reason why the engine doesnt turn over is because the starter reduction gear is stripped (teeth are missing). I can stand on the kickstart and it doesnt budge. Is there truth to this? I would think (although it hurts my head) that even if the gears for the starter are stripped, you would still be able to turn the motor over via the kickstart??? any info would be greatly appreciated!

You should be able to. If the teeth on the starter are stripped then there is no reason for it to be binding thus stopping the motor from moving. I would investigate further. If your interested in a project that is. Sounds like the cylinder is siezed. Doesn't mean its a total loss tho. A good machine shop can get the piston out and bore the cylinder and you could be in business. But I am the guy who never throws anything away because I still think there's hope fore it. Jut ask my wife about the yard full of projects.

okay so im not crazy..... i mean what good would a kickstart backup be if it didnt work if the starter went out? lol i guess i could take the big flat head screwdriver cap off the stator cover and see if i can get it to turn over via the stator bolt... i wouldnt hesitate picking it up if i knew what was wrong with it, but the way it sits there are way too many unknowns!

I had a Kawasaki mojave with after market electric start and the starter shaft broke and locked up the engine, making the kick start locked up too, so that story seems pretty legitimate to me
