I just replaced the rear axle bearings on my 86 350x. The axle still moves back and fourth.. :wondering Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

Is the axle nut assembly torqued properly?

Take it apart again and recheck your work..

I'm quite sure the answer will become clear to you.

Just keep in mind how the rear axle is supposed to tighten up into the carrier.

You are going to tighten the axle nut up to pull all the following parts together into solid contact:
- The sprocket hub on the axle
- The inner bearing race of the left bearing
- The spacer tube between the bearings
- The inner bearing race of the right bearing
- The threaded inner sleeve portion of the rear axle nut
- The large outer axle nut
- The collar around the axle
- The snap ring in the groove on the axle

All these parts are in direct solid contact when the axle nut is tightened correctly. You can see that the process starts and ends with something attached firmly to the axle. The key is to make sure there is no slop between each item in the list. If your axle still moves back and forth, there must be daylight somewhere in the path.
