84 atc 200 es how do you know if the timing chain is too loose engine not running

I am getting ready to rebuild the top end of my 84 atc 200 es I had a spare junk 200 engine I took the cylinder and head off its honed and the valves are redone and I am going to pull the engine out and change the top end <low compression> My question is how do I know before taking the engine apart if I should put a chain in it while I am there thanks for the help mike

Not to be a smart arse, but a manual will tell you. They are helpful for all that stuff. Also, I believe they are the same basic engine as on a 200s. I know that you adjust the cam chain while the engine's running, but I don't remember how it's done. One more thing. If you're not sure about the condition of it, a new cam chain is cheap insurance, especially if you're already going to have the engine apart.

I agree with 350. If you've got the head off, and the chain is of unknown age/mileage... change it.

If I recall, they're only $20.

I agree I ordered a new chain and as long as its apart I am going to put a ignition stator in thanks for the advice mike
