Saturday night was my first race in a 5 race series. Friday night I went to the track to practice. The bastids charged $30 to practice.I got to go out 4 times to practice,8 laps each. The first time I went out the blaster hooked up better than I thought it would.I was sticking to the turns very well. The 3rd time I went out,I slid into the wall every lap b/c someone in the practice trailprotrailpro me blew an oil line on his cannondale and covered the track w/ oil.The track crew cleaned it up as best they could but it was still like being on ice.The last lap I slid into the wall very hard and bent my axle and rim.It was still rideable so I went out again just to get in some laps and it hooked up good.(the track was cleaned off by then).I got home around 11:30 and stayed up until 1AM in a zero degree garage changing my axle and smashing my rim back into shape with a 3' 6x6 piece of wood. The rim is now oval shaped and the bead is smashed in,but the tire turns fairly straight.
Saturday I got to the track a few hours early to make some new friends and get familiar with the race schedule. The bastids charged me $12 for admission and $35 to race,,,jeez, back when i raced bikes it only cost $20 to race and riders didnt have to pay an admission fee. There were 9 guys in my class(novice).About 200-225 bike/quad riders showed up.The pits were small and cramped.I went out for practice and the blaster was sliding out and I couldnt get through the turns for crap.I lowered the airpressure in the left front tire to help it turn better. I took 3rd in my heat race(6 laps) and just made it into the main.My competition was a 400ex,yfz450,warrior,and quadracer.I started in the back row and was in 2nd place in the 2nd turn.I held second place behind the 400ex until the 2 lap sign came out, then I slid out wide in a turn and the yfz got by me on the inside.I wasnt worried b/c I knew i was safe with 3rd.The 400ex(#16) left us in the dust.
After that was over I flattened the front tire and lowered the left rear to about 1 lb.,just enough to stay on the rim.I had along wait until the main so I went out to watch the races and hang out with GMAN,his son and a few other friends. It was cold as a mofo on the bleachers.
When I came out for the main,I was again in the 2nd row on the outside for the start(6 quads,3 infront and 3 in back). It was me,400ex(#16),a different yfz450(#211),another blaster(#7),a banshee, and i forgot what the other was.The yfz450 was on the pole. When the green light came on I was like a madman on a mission, lol. I was in 3rd place on the back straight on lap 1.Everyone slid out in the first and second turn.Running both inside tires flat helped out alot. Then on the next lap I moved into 2nd and started to chase down the 450 but he had a whole straight away on me.I looked back to see who was behind me and there was no one even close.I was catching the 450 but ran out of laps before i could challenge him.He beat me by about 15 or 20'.We talked after the race and I told him I didnt feel bad getting beat by a yfz450,,,as long as it wasnt a honda, lol
I cant wait until next saturday.I might put my right front shock back on to see if it works better than the strut.I also need to look into getting a new rim/s :)
I also met a guy w/ a flamed out yellow Z400 that knows John R. and Chris D. He said those 2 are absolutely crazy and no one can touch them on the ice on their trikes, lol. he said any quad that goes on the ice falls victim to the atc250r and 350x,lol
Heres a few pics from the race.My friend that took the pics wasnt a good photographer so the action shots didnt come out too good.Hope to get better action pics next time.

Enjoyed the post & pics Jim! Your Blaster hung right in there against those bigger motored quads. You should go Tri-Z motored Blaster! ;)

Trikes are not allowed to race here,,,Something to do with insurance and liability and all the other legal crap. too bad,,,I know of enough trikes around here to make up a class.

Yes, Tri z_Jim beat a YFZ 450 at our second flat track race......I can vouch for him, I was riding the YFZ. I was going wide, waiting for the 2 400 ex's that were bumping each other to bump each other right out of the way, and he dove in right under me.......Damn

Hey guys,

Been a long time...health issues have kept me out of the game. Been trying to catch up on some of the posts. I lived out in Phoenix, in 96/97 and they still allowed me to race Flat track and TT against the quads and I kicked ass! The audience loved it because I was the only 3 wheelers against all quads. The race promoters told me that I couls start my onw class if I could get 5-10 riders. I couldn't swing it at the time as I ended up moving back east. But, if these guys could do it, others tracks must be able to do it as well. The only thing they wanted to know is whether or not I knew how to ride my trike properly. I went out and did a few moto's while they watched and they said... "No problem, go for it!"

Nice!!!! I am in Mass, and the weather is finally getting cold. Not much doing for Flat Track up here. They are struggling to get a quad season together. If I can make it down to FL next season I'll try to joing you guys, I blew out 3 discs in my back right now and have to try and let it health. My R is gathering dust and that depresses me :(

How many guys do you have in the class?

We're hoping to have at least 3 or 4 when the season starts in January. 3 is the minimum for a class here. Theres some other guys working towards getting setup for it that might join later on in the season. Its to bad your not closer, we can always use a couple more racers!

Is it cold enough up there to do some ice racing? Theres a group of guys in New York (JohnR and ChrisD) that race on a lake up there during the winter.

I hear you there. That's the problem I had out west. Glad to hear it is starting again, that's all it takes. I'll have to see if I can contact those guys as I believe they are still quite a hike from me. The weather has been between 30-50, so not cold enough for ice yet. The tires I have set up for my 250r are sweet on a good sheet of ice. I can wheelie it all day long. Can't wait to hear how your series goes.

What's your setup?

On the frame and suspension on mine I'm running internally lowered front forks, plus slide up in the triple tree 2 inches. Custom made 10 inch aluminum front wheel with 21inch Duro front tire, Durablue lowering link on the rear with stock swing arm. Durablue +4 extended axle, Burris 16inch grooved rear tires. Engine is 270cc LRD ported using a 68.5mm YZ250 piston, 39pwk carb, FMF pipe and silencer, ESR air box eliminator kit, Boyesen carbon fiber reeds. Hondaline black short track tank, and Aussieduner tank shrouds and warning decal. Should be pretty quick when I get it back out on the track and dialed in.

Hey Billy,

Any idea on the validity of the guy in Austin that supposedly has the Franks Trikes?

I tracked Kelvin down a while back and he doesn't know where any of his bikes are. He would sure love to see them.

I think their real. Several years ago when he first joined we all hounded him enough he produced the pictures that are floating around now. Several years later (Pretty recently actually) someone said they had seen the same pictures in an old magazine before but who knows, I'd never seen the pictures before they were posted here. He seemed to have quite a history with Kelvin, I guess he hung around his shop a lot when he was a young kid.
